I have my fig trees in pots and they are all doing well. I keep them short so the tops are always within arms reach. If you want fruit, then cut the end of the branch once it has grown 5 or 6 leaves and the fruits will develop at the base of each leaf. A couple of years ago I cut my oldest fig down to about 40cm when it was dormant, and it is now growing vigorously.

Q: Can this tree be planted in a pot or does it need to go in the ground??

I have a Scone fig tree which I bought many months ago. When it arrived I transplanted it into a 12 inch pot. It is doing very well. I would recommend planting the Scone fig into a pot rather than in the ground if you want it to give you fruit.

Q: Can this fig tree be planted straight in the garden?

You can hardly kill a fig tree once it is established. With the current weather we had even a small tree would survive. Going straight to plant it into the garden is fine and better if you restrict the roots with slabs for example. Other ways would be to plant it in an air pruning pot or rootex bags (more expensive). South facing wall with full sun is ideal. Tips to stimulate fruiting are available on many sites
