Q: Would it work in a 1296 sq ft crawlspace?

The short answer is it should. I put it in a 1250 sf crawlspace with about 3 feet of space between the vapor barrier and the joists. My crawlspace was dripping wet before I got it. I had a very wet early spring and the relative humidity under the house was 90+. I dug in a drain around the footer inside the foundation and ran it into a sump. I encapsulated the crawlspace, insulating its walls and sealing the vents. I then installed this dehumidifier in the space. I set it to come on when the humidity reading is 50% or greater. I have a monitor and it shows my crawlspace now rarely exceeds 51% and when it does it is reduced to below 50% within minutes. So in my estimation it will do the job if your space is properly prepared for using it. I have had it running for more than a year and other than cleaning the air filter I have had to do nothing to it. I did set it up to empty the water it removes into the same sump as the foundation drain. That sump is pumped out through the foundation when the sump fills.

Q: Can this unit be hung from ceiling?

I'm not a professional, but I'd say it can be put anywhere you want it as long as it's level. You would have to make your own straps or supports because it's made to sit on something. You could probably hang it from the carry handles, but this might leave it swinging, which wouldn't be good. If you did hang it from the handles, it should probably be checked regularly because who knows how long the handles might stay strong enough to support the weight in a humid area.
