Q: How do you adjust the hanging wire for a shorter length?

When the package is received, it comes with an S-hook and a small tool to adjust the length. Just use the gadget that comes with it

Q: Will pigeons stay away from this?

No. But pigeons wont stay away from anything. This feeder model is too small for them, but they will endlessly attempt to perch on the rim, spilling the tray in the mean time. If you do not want the pigeons on your small bird feeder, try placing a plate of seed far away from your feeder and far from you. Although, once they have devoured what it there, they will be back.

Q: how is it squirrel proof?

It’s not because the squirrels in my yard started to chew the plastic and do get in it.
