This brings back good memories!
Well, if you happen to buy this for a child that's about 6 or younger, this might not be the best type of lightsaber for them, because it is not quite as strong as the lightsabers from Star Wars Episode 3, but definitely stronger then the lightsabers from episode 2 (Well at least the episode 2 sabers that I bought). However the reason that this lightsaber (and all the others from episode 1) is not super strong is because it lights-up, and if were any thicker you probably wouldn't be able to see the light.Though I have never owned Darth Maul's saber, a friend of mine has (And still does). I however own Qui-Gon's, (And it is just as tough as Darth Maul's)and I still have it to this day. I have never had a problem with this lightsaber, and I was about 8 when I got it (and now I am 18), and I must say I played pretty rough with my older brother and sister. And the light-bulb actually lasted me for years. I got this saber back in 2000 or 2001 and the bulb finally died on me in 2008.The only thing that ever happened to my Qui-Gon Saber was I let my neighbor play with it, then he let my dog bite the tip of it (And I only owned it for a couple of months when this happened!). I was very upset (We melted and taped the end, so it is still in one piece). Though I just recently bought a new Qui-Gon lighsaber (The same exact one), though I will never get rid of my old one, because it was my very first lightsaber.

Very good but a risk
Very good but a risk I bought other lightsabers from rubies and the rest where bad but this one was really good the light is very bright and the blade is very strong and the orinal is 40 half the price of that but read other reviews too also the packed was damaged but other that that this was a good buy

Broke almost immediately-- very flimsy
Unfortunately I had the same experience as most people here it seems. The blades are VERY flimsy, and broke almost immediately when my 4 year old started to play with it. The blades will snap off and it is almost impossible to put them back together.Fortunately, I had a backup plan: I went and bought two of the non-electronic Darth Vader lightsabers (about $8 each and readily available), sanded the bases of them and glued them together with Gorilla super-glue. This works VERY well, and although there are no lights/sounds with these toys, my kids can play with it as rough as they do with the other single-blade lightsabers. My son loves it, and ANYONE can do this. No, it's not a cosmetically accurate toy, but he can play with it and doesn't care about accuracy of replica design. And isn't that the point? Now why Hasbro or somebody hasn't made a Darth-Maul lightsaber with the stronger blades and no sound/lights is a mystery to me. Hope my "homemade" idea helps some of you.

Great for costumes, less so for battles with Jedi Knights
I felt like I should add something positive to this products reviews seeing as the displayed reviews are heavily negative and from five years ago.We got this for my nine year old son's Darth Maul costume and I was initially worried that it was be as described in the reviews; cheap, flimsy, and easily broken. But for $11, it was worth ordering and finding out.Now I can't speak what this product was like five years ago, but here's a quick pros and cons list:Pros:* Looks great!* Good price!* Decent size! The body of the saber is pretty big for a nine year old. I was impressed when I took it out of the shipping box.* "Locks" on either end to keep it in a closed state* Belt notch for hanging from a beltCons:* Lights are fairly dim. I'm considering swapping out the bulbs with brighter LEDs if I find the time.* The "light" portion of the saber feels a bit short in length, but with such a long stock on, anything longer would probably be too much for kids to manage without inadvertently whacking other kids (as opposed to the more purposeful swings!)* It's plastic and can feel a bit loose. Again though, I come back to cost. It feels spot on for the price.Overall, I think this is a great choice for a costume prop. Obviously more can be spent, but then the cost doubles or triples on how fancy one wants to get for a single element of an outfit.

Meh
Personally Darth Maul is one of my favorite Star Wars characters in the whole franchise. So I was disappointed when I pulled the lightsaber out of the package and it broke. The black tabs that keep the lightsaber retracted broke as soon as it was taken out of the package. I was upset and this was a pretty big disappointment for me but overall ok lightsaber. Good attention to detail when you look at Mauls lightsaber in the Phantom Menace. More of a collectible than a play with toy. Okay lights.

My 7 year old approves
My 7 year old son demanded that I write a review that says, “This thing is SO cool and it does NOT break easily!”

Disappointing
I should have listened to what I have heard about this toy. I was ordering other items and my boys ( age 8 and 7 )looked over my shoulder and just had to have it. So I made the purchase. Now I know reviews are true and to listen well. This toy lasted not even 5 hours. My boys are pretty careful with their toys and even more so when playing with something that is "STAR WARS", but no matter how careful you are this toy is going to break. The silver portion where the lightsabers come out, splits on both sides of the crease making it impossible to push or pull them out. I tried to glue them and that was just a hot mess. So my son was really disappointed. Maybe this toy is just suppose to be used as a costume accessory? Either way its made for kids and its just not constructed for a childs use. So that was my experience hope it helps anyone looking to make this purchase. Better off to spend a little more money on one that is more durable.
