I like this clear and concise updated edition
I really enjoyed this read each day. It could be done as a daily devotional or as a commentary. It's very easy to read and very easy to understand. He is down to earth and not too wordy and appeals to the common person for sure. Some people might think he's too under easy to understand. That might make them feel he is direct. These are some of the things that he wanted to get through in this writing. He wanted to appeal to everyone on every level. I think he did that. I think you will enjoy this and it's so important to remember that he wrote this over 100 years ago and yet the struggles of his time are still some of the struggles we have today. People these days love our background stories so maybe you should start at the end and read his biography and then go back and read his thoughts. He lost his fortune as a Young Man and all hopes for his future plans completely fell through. These are some of the things that brought him to Christ in the first place. After following Christ and then becoming a minister he lost two or maybe three wives. He was well acquainted with loss and hurt. Also the times in which he lived were during the civil war, Darwin, in so many other popular thoughts that are so divisive, even now. Don't think that he lived in a Time when everything was just roses and lilies. These were difficult times and he suffered from poor health. This may strip away some of the thoughts you have as you read his positive and encouraging message that he derives from the scriptures.

Great Book!
I had already read J.C. Ryle's book on the Gospel of John and loved it. This one on Mark is just as good. I'm a retired minister and find reading through the Gospels with J. C. Ryle is very fulfilling. He feeds my mind, heart, and soul. Would REALLY encourage someone who finds it a bit difficult in getting out meaning out of reading the Bible to try doing so with the late J.C. Ryle!

This point is developed further at the end of this chapter
It is not possible for everyone to put their own interpretation on the law. The denial was limited to rejecting the construction put on his remarks
