The Irlen Colored Overlay Sample Pack includes one overlay of each color to help you choose the best color for you. Irlen 9" x 12" colored acetate overlays can be placed over printed materials to determine whether reading is made easier. Each sheet has a glare and non-glare side for increasing comfort. Each color is carefully determined by years of Irlen research. Not everyone is helped by the same color or combination of colors.

Fantastic if you have difficulty with black on white print
I used these with certain students when I taught reading. I left my set with another teacher when I retired. Now, I'm working with my 8 yr old granddaughter with a reading disability and ordered these to see if they would help her. The blue gray is perfect, so I'm sending half a sheet to school for her and the others for the teacher to see if they help her other students.

Great products - Irlen and Crossbow Education are definitely the leaders in this field.
Good quality overlays for those with reading difficulties. Please note that overlays do not cure dyslexia, which is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. HOWEVER, is is common for those with dyslexia to also be affected by visual stress/irlen, which is thought to be caused by an over stimulation of the visual cortex, which in turn causes distortions in text as well as headaches, fatigue and many other symptoms. The use of the correct color filters some of the more stimulating wavelengths of light, allowing the brain to be able to process the visual information correctly and "fix" the words on the page. It is essential to test with as many colors as possible to ensure you find the most effective.Irlen are doing great work, however It is also worth noting that UK based Crossbow Education are also fantastic in this field, I like to have both company's sets available, as it gives me a wider range of colors for the kids to choose from. You can get their products on Amazon here in the states too, although I would recommend going to their US website as they have a wider range of products, with some smaller "Reading Rulers" which are useful for the kids to keep in their books as bookmarks.

Making a huge difference in my daughters education!
These were perfect!! I recently ran across an article about Irlen's. It was like the article was written about my daughter. I found these overlays and thought for the price I would try these before I spent the money to have her tested. We went through all the colors and the minute we used the rose overlay she knew immediately it was perfect for her. Some she would say it's a little a better, or no, not at all on some of the other colors. When we got to the rose she said YES, it's all clear. I was both amazed and frustrated that it took until the end of 3rd grade for us to find out this was what she needed. I HIGHLY recommend getting these if you think you or your child is suffering from Irlen's. We have a meeting with a diagnostician in June to get her lenses, but until then the overlay is working perfectly.

Amazing Variety! Buy This For Irlen/Dyslexia trouble shooting
Love all the official color options. They’re a blessing and has helped my child. Have you asked your child if the words move or do they tend to get tummy pain when reading. The words on a page, the black/white combination on a page could be the issue. The words might be moving on them. Try these! For a child with Irlen Disorder they won’t see the color on white paper, it makes the words stop moving and they see a crisper white although it’s a pink/red/green overlay. Their brain sees the world differently. My child went from tummy ache hating to read to a chapter book lover. Unless you ask questions they/you won’t know that what they see and experience isn’t the same as you. My child thought words moving on a page was part of reading like a game but one they didn’t want to do...they thought it happens for everyone so never said anything till I started asking them questions.

Pricey, but worth it.
My son was complaining that words were moving around on the page. Many of my friends mentioned Irlen's syndrome and encouraged me take him in for the testing. The test by an Irlen's certified screener in my area is $440. So to check this myself I ordered this kit and made a chart of all of the single color and double color combinations. Printing off two font sizes (12 and 8 pt) with a paragraph of text, we were able to determine his optimal color out of 55 combinations. It took a coupe of days because certain colors amplify the movement. Once we got his colors we checked a couple of alternatives to Irlens, and after 3 optomotrists, an othamologist, a psychologist (who claimed knew Irlens testing) we ended with a visual therapist who prescribed special glasses that stopped the movement for my son. He went from 56 words per minute to 99 in about 2 months after the glasses, so we didn't persue Irlens's lenses. In the Irlens's book, they recommend checking with optomotrists and visual therapists prior to getting Irlen's lenses to make sure there isn't an underlying issue.

Life changing for my 8yr old son!
This was life changing for my 8 year old son who suffers from Dyslexia and Dysgraphia. After exhausting levels of research and thorough testing my son was still struggling. I ordered these and we tried each color. The minute I put the Turquoise colored plastic sheet over a paper with writing my son said these words to me "Everything is straight!!!" It turns out he never knew that what he was seeing was incorrect. The problem lies within white paper and black lettering most of the time. When a backround is of a different color a person/child will more often be able to see it correctly but not when it is on white/cream or possibly grey based paper. Each color will be individual and the eye of those effected will clearly let you know which color is right for them...

NO DIFFERENCE NOTED
I tried these with my most needy kindergartners. Saw no difference, even when we tried different colors. I gave them the choice of colors at first, then I tried choosing them. Same results. No difference compared to not using an overlay. Maybe I should have tried 6 year olds, as Marie Clay recommends, in Reading Recovery texts. Would love to see if someone has had success using with first graders.
