In my personal opinion, an 8 year old could honestly surprise you on how much they know about technology. Some 8 years are very smart and from what I've learned over the years kids will find ways to solve problems without the help of an adult. Now, I'm not saying that he/she should be left alone or that they may not need help, but kids should be given more credit than what is given to them already. It all depends on how the child has been raised and if they are interested in the activity they are doing.

Q: Are the data/specification sheets for the sensors provided?

No, but what is provided is a pdf file that shows how to use each sensor, and how to hook them up to the arduino, as well as an explaination on how a lot of the sensors are used. In the old version ( 33 sensors) there were 165 pages in the pdf for a total of 26 lessons. I was very happy with the sensor kit.

Yes it will work with any Arduino uno or Compatable.
