The V&A Sourcebook Of Pattern And Ornament (Victoria And Albert Museum)

This is a great book for pattern and design students. I bought it as part of my Surface Pattern & Textile Design course. It is full of historical pattern designs.

An excellent book that has been a wealth of inspiration in my design work. Such a wide variety of themes are covered through the photos in the book, from animals, trees, flowers, geometric, and the images are very clear.

The pages are somewhat matte and not as crisp as a glossy coffee table book. Sadly, the imagery is haphazardly organized by subject matter with only short explanations- some lacking dates. The photos themselves rarely expand the full page, with about 4 patterns per page. Sifting through is a jarring kaleidoscope kind of experience rather than the calm and beauty that pattern provides. There seems to be no organization to the book at all. The price tag on this book is definitely not worth it. It feels like a cheap $10 discount job from a huge retailer than a $60 luxury piece.

A lovely book, well researched. While previous commenters were unhappy with the layout of this book, I was not as the book is meant to be a sourcebook/sampler. Each pattern is accompanied by excellent historical information that a reader can use to further explore the pattern, the maker, or the historical time period of the source. A great book, and a great treat for fans of the V&A!
