Stunning lens with one feature worth the money - it weighs almost nothing
When choosing a lens weight is not usually a factor. Quality, value for money, how much light it lets in etc are usually the most important features to look for. This lens has all those, it's super sharp, well made, lets in lots of light ( f2.5 is more than needed on moderm high ISO digital cameras ) and it's not expense when compared to Gmaster lenses. I own many f1.4 gmaster lenses and they are all brilliant but when looking to take a camera with a Gmaster lens on it out for the day the problem that immediately becomes obvious is the total weight. So to have quality is a ridiculously light weight lens is heaven. I have it running on my new ( as at may 2023 ) Sony zv e1 and together it is dream come true. A stunning small full frame camera with a stunning small lens - small with no compromises. If you are looking for a Cinematic look in video this will do it.

I love this
Love this lens. I have this for my A7C.I have 28mm f2 which is also compact but this one is a little more so and the focal length of this is great because I found myself using Super 35 mode with my 28mm lens which equates to 42mm focal length. The build quality is great, very premium and when on the camera, feels likes it’s part of the camera.I reviewed extensively on what focal length I should I go for in terms of casual, street photography and kept coming to this 40mm and when I saw this compact version, although it’s only f2.5, I had to go for it because it’s a Sony lens, so no compromises in terms of quality or functionality features!!It has aperture ring, focus ring, and a customisable function button. I didn’t know how much I would appreciate and make use of the rings!! Aperture ring is great to use compared to using built in ring that’s on the camera, as on my A7C, I have a thumb grip attached and it makes it a little difficult to access the ring but with this lens it’s great! Pricey but I believe this is a great lens to have on my camera (actually, the only one when I go out in London or travel wherever else). I own this 40mm, the 28mm (which I stopped using as much sadly) and then the 35-150 tamron (which is intended for more professional photoshoots - and oh is it great, seriously check it out).

Perfect for my Sony A7C
Compact, very well made and the pictures are really sharp edge to edge. Bought it for my A7C as I wanted something that was not going to weigh me down when travelling. This is perfect.

Superb lens, fabulous results
This is a beautifully designed lens that has a lovely, slightly retro look. It is perfect on my Sony A7c as it is small and light. Although it is not super-fast, with a maximum aperture of f2.8, it has worked really well in every situation I have used it - including low light interiors. As a landscape lens, it is near perfect and, given its size and weight, is easy and comfortable to carry around all day. Super purchase.

Finally found my ideal nifty 50
As a long term Sony shooter I have tried just about every incarnation of the 50 and 50 ish offerings from both Sony and others.Without digging to deep, although there are many options, they either fall under the not good enough (sony 50 1.8), the frustrating limitations of the min focus distance and slightly add focal length (sony 55), just too damn big (sony/Zeiss 50 1.4), beautiful but limited (zeiss loxia 50) or naff autofocus and size (Samyang 50 1.4) to name but a few! This f2.5 lens didn't even catch my eye, ‘what, not even an f2!’ until a couple of weeks ago when I spotted some sample picture that just had wonderful rendering qualities….so I picked one up expecting to be underwhelmed. One outing with this lens and I am sold, above all the other qualities, including size, weather sealing, build, af, mfd, the rendering and colour are just excellent, it has a look…you know what I mean! The f2.5 is not exactly a headline feature but it’s not a real limitation when weighted against the benefits - stunning lens and finally a real nifty (not thrifty) 50 that will be my go to….To conclude, i feel a quest has come to an end and I love this 50mm lens!

seriously good lens
This is a exceptionally good lens, light, fast and sharp, i mean corner to corner sharp even in wide open aperture, is also deadly quietin last 15 years i have owned some impressive lenses and bodies, always full frame and high quality lenses when could afford, for last 5 years i carried around a 5D mkIII with 24-70 F2.8 L as all rounder and a 50mm 1.4 for some close ups , anyway last months i decided to down size ( weight wise) so traded all of that and 3 more L series lenses with a Sony A7iv body then got this 40mm 2.5 from amazon to do every thing... I mean that's it, nothing else... bold move but is being a fantastic so farIs it worth the price tag? absolutely, without a doubtBTW this is definitely not a nifty fifty or some cheap description as some others wrote,it is a serious kit

Small Giant
I bought this lens for its small size. My A7R4 is heavy with my standard 24-105mm lens and is difficult to hold steady if there is any movement. This 40mm is great for actual travelling. The results are extremely sharp with good colours. An excellent addition to my kit.

Good quality - could be sharper
A great run-and-gun lens for daily life, but would be nicer if it was brighter; that said, at this price point and size, something has to give.
