## Overview

The Watts Premier Replacement Sensor Valve is a 4.5-inch stainless steel valve with 1/2" threaded connectors, engineered exclusively for Watts Premier 500800 and 500805 hot water recirculating pump systems. It automatically opens to return cooled water to the heater and closes at 98°F, ensuring rapid hot water delivery while conserving water. Designed for indoor residential use on standard tank water heaters, it offers easy installation without additional tools or sealants.

## Description

Designed for use on branched hot water lines coming from the water heater, the Watts Premier Replacement Sensor Valve can serve as a replacement valve or for adding an additional valve where it's needed. It is exclusively compatible with the Watts Premier 500800 or 500805 Hot Water Recirculating Pump models. Please note that this valve is not intended for use with dedicated return lines to the water heater. As an essential part of the hot water recirculating system, the sensor valve enhances the efficiency of your hot water system by opening when the water on the hot water side cools, effectively pushing the cool water back to the water heater. Once the hot water line reaches 98°F, the valve closes, ensuring that you have immediate access to hot water while reducing the wait time. This not only improves comfort but also helps in conserving water. The installation and maintenance process straightforward and hassle-free. The simple design of the replacement sensor valve ensures that it can be easily installed without the need for additional components or specialized tools. For best results, avoid using thread sealant tape or pipe dope on the sensor valve threads during installation. The Watts Premier Replacement Sensor Valve is compatible with all types of pipes, adding to its versatility. However, it is designed for indoor use only on standard tank water heaters in residential buildings. It is not suitable for use with tankless water heaters or for outdoor applications.

Review: Wished I had replaced this valve sooner! - Works great. Wish I had replaced the other one sooner. The first one came with the instant hot water pump. This brings warm water to our upstairs bathroom in no time, saving us a lot of wasted water and the money to pay for that water.
Review: Simple replacement - I’ve had my Watts hot water circulation system for about 3 years. For the last few months it has not been working as well and noticed it was taking longer for hot water to arrive. Thought it might be the colder winter we had. Not that. Pump was running normally so I assumed the transfer valve was the culprit. Ordered and replaced and it solved the problem. Not too excited that the simple valve failed in less that 3 years. Hopefully this one will last longer.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: So what this does is move the hot water through the pipes constantly, not just when you need it? Seems like an energy suck. Is it?**
A: If you run this all the time you will likely increase your water heating costs significantly as you are turning your pipes into a big radiant heater. You can use the built in timer to only have it come on at set periods, but this will only work if you have a very fixed schedule. I attacked this another way. I plugged the unit into a TP-Link HS110 Smart plug that is Alexa controlled. I can just say turn on hot water pump or turn off hot water pump when I want to control it. But that was not good enough for me. I found that if this pump ran for four minutes it would give me hot water at the distant shower that I wanted, so I did the following. I wrote a routine to turn on the pump, wait four minutes and then turn it off. While I can run this by voice, I bought the new Amazon Alexa Button, they are about $14 for a two pack. The button is battery operated and communicates to another Alexa device. Just before I take a shower I push the button and within four minutes the water will be hot without having to run water.

**Q: If the pump is on, and the water is hot, the sensor valve closes, right? Isn't the pump trying to push water against a totally closed line?**
A: The pump just stirs water in the pump housing. It's not a positive displacement pump, so it has no problem doing that. But most of the time the control valve allows a trickle of hot water to flow, just enough to keep the faucet temperature at a constant 100°.

**Q: can i used without the sensor valve**
A: The control valve keeps the water temperature at the faucet at 100° by slowing the flow to a trickle. If you don't use the control valve, be prepared for the hot water to circulate at full speed and the temperature at the faucet to go up to whatever your water heater is set for.

**Q: Does this shut down the flow completely once temperature is reached or will it continue to trickle water into the cold water line?**
A: The valve allows a slow flow of water back through the cold water line, enough to maintain the temperature at the faucet at about 100°F. If you let the hot water run, the temperature at the faucet goes over 100°F, and the valve shuts off the back flow through the cold water line. After the faucet is shut off, the water in the valve will cool to below 100°F, and the valve will crack open and allow some flow to keep the water warm. The valve does not bang open and shut. It opens more or less, as needed to keep the water warm at the faucet. It doesn't depend on the temperature set at the water heater, except that if the water is very hot, obviously it takes less to keep the water warm at the faucet. The valve accomplishes this automatically.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Simple replacement

### ⭐ Internal springs no longer stainless steel - major failure
*by K***Z on February 7, 2025*

I purchased this as a replacement for one that failed (5 years old). The replacement failed within 3 months. I disassembled the original unit and discovered the cause of failure was calcium buildup, I cleaned and reassembled it for use as a spare. This allowed me the knowledge of how the unit is assembled and what components are used. Upon removal of the replacement valve, I was shocked. The failure was cause by the internal springs made of steel, which rusted and clogged up the internal works of the valve. My original valve used stainless steel springs and is now back in service, working perfectly. I will attempt to contact the manufacturer for this issue.
