A detailed companion to the performing life of Kenneth Williams...
Whilst appreciating the effort required to pull together such a volume and acknowledging that this is an interesting companion to other items of interest for fans of Kenneth Williams, notably the Diaries and Letters, please be aware that this very comprehensive book may not be of great interest to the general reader with a casual interest in its subject. The book is perhaps most suited for dipping into - which doesn't mean to say it's at all slight. Each page is divided into two columns; the amount of detail given is copious. For example, if you've a yen to check out a particular episode of 'Just A Minute' featuring Williams, what he and his co-panellists spoke about, who won, etc this very detailed volume will tell you all you need to know. And there are anecdotes peppered throughout. New to Williams? First I'd suggest reading the Diaries. Then the Letters. Kenneth Williams was a most interesting man - well-read, eloquent, thoughtful, as an actor a consummate comedian and tragedian, by turns uber-confident yet plagued by self-doubt. In many ways, a very modern soul who lived an admirably stripped down, simple life as well as being at the epicentre of the cultural maelstrom of the sixties. He was a friend of Joe Orton - who grasped the zeitgeist perhaps better than any other writer of the time - and of Barbara Windsor. Williams was unafraid to embrace 'high' and 'low' culture. As if he'd some notion that these things would become mercifully fuzzier, less defined, as the decades sped by. He was right - they have.

Detailed account of his day to day work. Must have taken forever to research. KW was a tortured soul and we miss him. He was a busy chap as the book shows.

A truly amazing book
I thought there was nothing new to write about Kenneth Williams, I was so wrong. A truly amazing book which must have taken years to compile; I thought I would just dip in and out of it but I'm finding it very difficult to put it down!
