A brand new insight into the world of supermodel Gia Marie Carangi. Some fantastic new stories that provide a closer look at the real person and the life she lead both before and during the addiction that took her from us. An absolute MUST for the Gia fan.

Non fiction about supermodel Gia Carangi
Born This Way is a non-fiction book about the life of American supermodel Gia Carangi. It mainly covers the eight years from 1978 until her death that she spent in and around New York modelling. The book is narrated as a series of memoirs from friends, colleagues and co-workers. Gia cam from a broken home in Philadelphia, she was described as; fun, young, needy, shy, shocking and vulnerable. Yet when she stepped in front of the camera she took on a different persona, one which the cameras adored.Sadly a mix of the industry she was in, her background and her choices led to drugs and then AIDS and she died aged just twenty-six.I would say this is a niche read for those interested in either the industry or the model herself. I did not know anything about Gia, so was unfamiliar with any of her personal life-story.

Account of Gia Carangi's life as a supermodel and how she is consumed by addiction.
A good account of Gia's modelling career and her tragic end as told by her friends and family, brought together nicely by Sacha.

Massively disappointing
Massively disappointing on a number of levels. Firstly, when the book arrived, I was somewhat surprised to see what a slim volume it is (given the pricing) and that is without factoring in the many blank sheets throughout the book. Ahead of purchasing, I also imagined there may be photographs included in the book which may attribute to the high price but there are none. Nevertheless, I put that to one side expecting a riveting read. The author notes early on that she has not interviewed many of those who have spoken before (such as Gia's family, Sandy Linter etc) but the result appears to be shared 'memories' by people who really did not seem to know Gia too well at all. One person's key memory is when Gia smiled at him. I can't say that I learned a single new thing about Gia from this book and it is relatively light on actual comments from those who knew her. The Thing of Beauty by Stephen Fried is a far superior and informative book. The only reason I haven't given a one star rating is because I persevered to the end (expecting it would pick up)

Sacha is a wonderful friend and has written a lovely book that tries very hard to understand Gia from a loving girl who became lost in a world she was not really comfortable living in; she would have been better following a different path in life. Sacha has done a very good Job at understanding Gia and avoids undue focus on her sex life; instead trying to understand why she was so good at her Job. Even though she disliked what she did for a living. Well done.
