A metal back box should be used for that as it is very much stronger. Therefore the plastic version should only be surface mounted as I have installed mine. **Q: Is this a 44mm back plate?** A: Yes **Q: Will these sockets fit metal back boxes** A: Yes you might have to get longer screws I got some from B&Q job done hope that this helps you **Q: Is this the right size to fit a putty pad inside?** A: I have never put a putty pad inside. And it is not made to have one. I just made a hole to reiver the electric wire. Screw on the base to the wall. Conect the wires. Note. Make sure the Electric is on off. Screw on the the top switch on the power. Put a test plug in. A positive result.
