I just used it on a 3 week trip to Thailand, with a lot of luggage transfers between airplanes (4 each way), loading into transportation vans (6). It held up very well to the handling. The layer in between is a mesh compartment that separates the top and bottom half. The bottom half is around 28” long and about 14” wide. The lower compartment is about 5”deep before the upper compartment which is another 6” or so. All in all there is a lot of room in it more than most suitcases the same size. **Q: Is the 35" version too big to be considered "standard luggage" with an airline?** A: This bag is NOT 62"! It is 34.5" to 35" long (not including the handle), by 16" by 14". That is at least 2.5" over the 62" limit for many flights, which is what I purchased it for. As mentioned in other answers, many domestic airport personnel will ignore small size overages. HOWEVER, when you return, the international airports are much stricter, and you might be subject to massive oversize fees. I am NOT happy. **Q: If the most common maximum size checked bag allowed is 62 linear (total) inches, why does the mid sized bag have a 63.5 inches?** A: The linear inches is ignored commonly by airline ticket counter reps as they focus on the total weight. Of course there's a limit to large sized bags but agents check 36 inch bags all the time as long as they do not exceed 50 lbs...this 37 inch bag at 50lbs or less should be no problem but likely will not be full at 50lbs so actual size is less...I'm in the industry and know a lot of airline reps...they are focused on weight far more than size... **Q: Does it qualify as a carry on for the airlines. The wheels could be better (they have a bit of friction, and in the cold they tend to seize up.). The exterior pockets are intuitive and helpful. The non-main zippers could be stronger though, so time will tell on durability. i with the top access zippers had a tsa-lock whole, as without security is kinda pointless. I've taken it on a few flights and it's done very well through baggage claim. As others mentioned you have to be careful about weight limits. I have the 30-inch and filled up it easily goes over the 50lb check-in limit if it's mainly compacted clothing. I can't imagine using the larger 35-inch unless you are filling with light bulky items. Overall, extremely impressed, and for this price, it's a no-brainer. I used to use a Patagonia 100L but it had no wheels, and this was a last minute replacement and so far I'm more than happy.
