Review: simmering slow paced masterpiece that explodes - if you don't mind a film thats a play with the limitations of a play then this is a good film. the story is slow to unfold or so it seems. it would have made a great action film spanning wars and history and human nature but thats not what the creators of the film fences wanted. they wanted your mind, your imagination and your soul to provide that. there is an awful lot of talking. an awful lot of people sitting in a yard or a bar or in the kitchen. its very static. but the acting and the story is not static. it takes you back to a time when racism and prejudice dominates the main characters lives. even those characters we dont see. it blights and it corrodes three generations and more. the light comes in the form of violas character. strong beautiful and serene. its a must watch film that you will have to sit and listen to with your ears and your heart. a masterpiece

I really enjoyed this film. I had to watch it twice to really get into the story. There’s a lot of dysfunction going on, broken dreams, commitment, betrayal, secrets, it’s all there. I enjoy films that depict the past so l enjoyed all the clothes, furniture, the scenery. I would recommend this film if you like life stories.
