However I eventually decided that I could do quite a bit with just the primaries and so took the plunge and bought this basic set. Well, I will no longer complain about the cost that's for sure. Despite the pans being quite small, this stuff goes a long, long way. Obviously it's still quite expensive to set up with a good selection of colour but now I have seen what good value the pans are I will be more willing to pay that outlay. With some trial and error I was able to get not only shades of the primaries but of secondaries and, to a lesser extent, tertiaries too. They really do mix like paints, but this is still a limited pallet and though it has shown me how well they mix, it's obvious that for any serious work I will need more colours. If you were concentrating on something like house florals you could probably get away with just this set and maybe an extra green but it would be more work than necessary when so many other colours are available, and it would be quite limiting. I have yet to receive my blending medium (from another seller) so I haven't really seen just how versatile they are but I am already impressed by what can be done. The greatest thing for me is just how quick they are to lay down over a large area. I detest doing backgrounds for my coloured pencil and soft pastel work but these make it a breeze. And colour pencil and pastel go over the pan pastels (and vice versa to an extent) meaning they really do make my life so much easier. My pans all arrived in good condition and although I have used them quite a lot, hardly any pastel seems to be gone. As you can tell, I am very happy with these and will be buying more Pan Pastels. My only regret is that I didn't try them sooner. Well!! all 10 came in perfect condition and they look fantastic and silky. I know some people have issues as there is only one lid, but the others all screw on top of each other, so for me no issue at all. A label with all the colours come with, that wrap around the whole cylinder. This is the only slight and I mean slight issue as it may have been better to have a colour on the side of each dish so you know what is in each pot instead of having to go back to the label and counting down to the colour you need. Would I recommend? YES. I know it is not cheap but the quality is fantastic and goes a lot further and is easier to blend than sticks or pencils. Comes with a few tools, a little bit small for my hands but I did not buy for the tools. Overall, 10/10 for me. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great for animal and bird paintings *by R***S on 15 February 2020* This is a great set if you draw a lot of animals or birds. Very neutral colours that work wonderfully together. It comes with the usual few sponges and the ends to go on the tools, which I find a bit pointless if you don't have the tool. My set arrived with about 4 of the pans smashed up inside, however I don't think that's a huge issue as they still work. Obviously this set only comes with one lid, so if you wanted to keep them separate you would need to buy extra lids. I quite like them stacked though as it's neater and space saving.
