Excellent book
I bought this for my 16 year old foster daughter to read. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did.

Harrowingly Hopeful
As with all of her books, Torey Hayden spins her breathtaking tale of the hopeless turned hopeful. She writes of a child, abused beyond comprehension, neglected, and seemingly unwanted; a disturbed child with an exceedingly high IQ; a perplexity. With the love, hope, grace, and the tiniest bit of insanity of her teacher, the child is able to find the strength within herself to aim for a better behavior, and better view of the world, and overall a better life. While every book written by Hayden calls into question her style of setting boundaries, they also show the every day struggle of teachers everywhere who are just fighting to do what’s best for the children they care for.

Great read
I really enjoy Torey's books; however, like many of her others, I wish the editing had been done a little better as there's some misspelled words, poor grammar, etc. Great story that I finished in a few days!

Still love the story, even after 30+ years!
Over 3 decades ago, as a child, I read a story about an abused and severely damaged child and a teacher who in spite of herself managed to help that child patch her pieces together. I lost that book, a compilation of stories, but I never forgot that story, obviously, and ever so often, over the years, I googled terms related to it, in hopes of finding it, but always referred to it as a short story.A couple days ago, I found the story. I'd searched once again, excluding the word short, and there it was, among the results, a deeply beloved tale and that which I'm certain was just one of those childhood experiences that instilled in me from since probably even before middle school, that I wanted to be a teacher.Reading it again, some 35-ish years later, I realized so many things about my decisions as an educator. One such acknowledgement was of my propensity for departing tough love to my students and a constant strive for consistency. For so many reasons, as a child, long before I even knew of the trials and tribulations of a teacher, this book inspired me to want to be a Torey Hayden, even if for just one child.

A Must-Read for Educators
This book is a fantastic read and really highlights the importance of educators’ roles in their students lives. Torey single-handily saved Sheila’s life.

This book moved me to tears
The sensitive, authentic, and insightful way this book is written will spur your emotions in a way exceptionally few narratives will. Torey Hayden is an outstanding author, capable of carefully integrating her own perspective, and that of the objective observer, in an honest, integral way, sparing herself nothing, writing with the painfully reflective self-critique few people are capable of.This book will make you laugh; it will make you cry. It will make you ask questions and consider moral dilemmas in a way you have never considered before. For anyone who wants to read something which is genuinely moving, and is prepared to have their deeply set ideas about children, society, poverty and life itself questioned, do not hesitate to give this read!
