EXPERIENCE THE MIRACLE OF METAMORPHOSIS! Children of all ages will love seeing the different stages a butterfly goes through during its life cycle. This pack includes a 21" Butterfly, 3.25" Egg, 14.75" caterpillar and a 11.5" chrysalis. Each deflates easily for storage. A LITTLE ABOUT THE MONARCH The North American Monarch population migrates south every year around late Summer/Autumn. They have been known to travel thousands of miles in this journey! Even from as far north as Canada all the way down to Mexico. The monarch's wingspan ranges from 3.5 to 4.0 inches. The wings and body feature a brilliant orange color with black veins and margins. White spots also decorate the butterfly's wingtips. Some researchers have observed that a monarch can fly as fast as 5.5 mph! The Monarch lays her eggs on the underside of a milkweed leaf. The eggs take anywhere from 3 to 8 days to develop and hatch into tiny caterpillars. The caterpillars will eat and store energy for the chrysalis stage. Some of the things they eat are the milkweed leafs and even their own egg shells that they emerged from! After eating and growing enough the caterpillar will then find a cozy place to hang from and molt into a chrysalis. During warmer summer weather conditions it may only take between 8 and 15 days for the chrysalis to mature into a butterfly. In the Pupa stage the caterpillar sheds its skin and transforms inside its exoskeleton. When the transformation is complete the butterfly will slowly extend its wings to allow fluid to expand and stiffen them. After she is ready she will fly off to find plant nectar to feed on. This whole process may take as few as 25 days if the weather is warm. If the weather is a little cooler though it could take as many as 7 weeks from egg to butterfly.
