Pretty versatile
I bought these shears primarily for the hedge, they haven't been cut since last summer and decided to commit to a pair of hand shears over electric or petrol. My first attempt to cut a hedge and I was pretty impressed, actually quite easy. I have also use the shears to cut back a couple of branches from the sycammore tree overhanging into my garden, the thickest branch thicker than my thumb. I've trimmed a grassy part around my vegetable boxes and I am surprised the result I got from trimming the derelict land side of my garden with weeds and grasses over 5'. After all this, I did feel the blades starting to scrape, but I find them easy to clean. Damp Kitchen towel, first time cleaned was about a week after trimmed the hedges and have been kept in my warm shed in this weather. I've now got a 3 in 1 oil for lubricating them, applied a bit other day and they feel a lot smoother. Just a couple of quid from Screwfix. Definitely recommend them, £20 well spent, and I know it would have cost me a lot more to get someone in to do my hedge. No sign of wear and tear at all like I have had from some cheap shears.

Spears and jackson shears light weight aluminium version
I bought this pair of shears for my wife to do front garden edge as she doesn't like electric grass trimmers. As we only have a small front lawn it is easier to use shears rather than making a mess with heavy trimmer.Shears look quality and as we only used it once so far only tbe time will tell but as Spear and Jackson is a well reputed brand I have every confidence that it will last .

Correction with my previous review
Please accept my apology for my comments regarding my Spear andJackson shears.I got them mixed up with another gardening tool that had the pivot bolt coming loose regularly requiring constant tighteningMy Spear and Jackson shears work well as long as you walk backwards snipping as you go and not forwards. I.f you drag the shears behind it will take most of the weight of your arms. A good addition to my gardening tools.

Cutting edge is very good. handles well in use
Quite impressed with these shears. Cutting edge is very good. handles well in use. Have cut several shrubs / hedges since purchase and still cuts cleanly with no adjustment required. I would buy these again when required. It will be a while though . Good quality very satisfied.

Better than any strimmer!
Having used a strimmer for edges around our back garden grass for many years and being fed up with the amount of line and combitrim spool lines we have gone through, decided to look for a viable alternative that would be easy to use other than reverting to traditional hand shears.Pleased to have found these brilliant (well known make) Spear & Jackson light weight long handled shears with razor sharp blades. No need to bend down either.Used them for the first time today as I began the Autumn tidy up of the garden.Great job done and edges now looking very good.Bye bye strimmer. Should have purchased these shears long ago.Excellent price too, with substantial discount on original recommended cost.Highly recommend.
