Today, the 2976 Chelsea boot is a slick, uncompromisingly fashion-forward look for all genders. The Chelsea is forged using one of the finest methods of construction: utilizing a Goodyear welt and heat-sealing it to the sole.This season, the boot gets an empowering boost from an aggressive, 1 1/2 inch platform sole. Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. In euro sizes, a 37 tends to fit me better than a 38. I have a very narrow foot. According to Dr Marten's size chart I should wear a 6 and with the reviews and desertcart saying they run large, I ordered the 6. They were too small and very tight. One of my toes was rubbing the inside of the top of the boot. I returned for the size 7. Still snug (but I was also wearing them with thick socks) but fit is much better and no rubbing. Mine did need some break in time and continue to feel better and better the more I wear them. I wear a 7.5 in Blundstones, my feet were swimming in the 8s. They were also snug at first but perfectly hug my feet now, so I'm hoping that's what happens with these. On a side note, I have struggled for many years to get a black Chelsea boots that I like and can easily style. I've sent so many shoes back or never wear them. THESE are so cute and easy to style and look natural on where I've either felt unnatural, too dressy, or too clunky in other black boots. Little snug with a regular daily compression sock. But comfortable snug. I am a 6.5 and bought a 7. No slip in the heel or toe area, wide enough, but not too wide.
