Review: A Staple for Healthy, Growing Aquarium Plants - I keep coming back to Seachem Flourish Excel because it consistently helps my aquarium plants stay healthy and grow well. After regular dosing, I’ve noticed stronger growth and better overall plant appearance. It’s easy to dose, and the bottle lasts a good amount of time depending on tank size. I’ve had good results using it as part of a regular maintenance routine, especially in planted tanks where I want steady growth without setting up a full CO2 system. The plants respond well, and I’ve seen improved color and vitality over time. As long as you follow the recommended dosing instructions, it integrates easily into a standard care schedule. If you maintain a planted aquarium and want reliable support for plant health, this has been a dependable product in my experience.
Review: Excellent product for algae control and for plant growth - I purchased this product after some plants I had bought introduced black beard algae to my aquarium. I tried a couple of other products prior to this with no luck. I tried spot treating with Hydrogen Peroxide and while that did seem to work, it was too difficult to use. I had the algae all over the tank to the point that the Hydrogen Peroxide just wasn't a practical solution. I've been using the Flourish Excel for about five weeks now. After maybe ten days to two weeks, it had basically eradicated my algae problem. I still have a couple of spots of green or brown algae here or there - but it's exactly that, just spots. I suspect the Flourish Excel works better or worse on different kinds of algae (as it completely destroyed my problem Black Beard algae) but even on the algae that it doesn't completely take care of, it certainly reduces it and holds it at bay. Additionally, the plants seem to love it. It took a couple of weeks before I noticed substantial enough plant growth that I was sure it was because of the products and not simply regular expected growth from the plants naturally. I have been using this product in conjunction with a shrimp safe liquid fertilizer and my plants have benefitted greatly. My desertcart Swords in particular have tripled in size since starting this product with the liquid fertilizer. Very pleased. Great product, with no side effects to the fish, snails, or shrimp and crawfish in the tank.

## Features

- CARBON PRODUCTION: All plants require a source of carbon, and Flourish Excel is a great and convenient source of bioavailable organic carbon.
- IRON PRODUCTION: Flourish Excel also possesses iron reducing properties, thus promoting the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3).
- PHOTOSYNTHESIS: Plants must produce longer chain carbon compounds (photosynthetic intermediates). By dosing with Flourish Excel you bypass the involvement of chain carbon compounds, and introduce the already finished, structurally similar compounds.
- TREATMENT: On initial use or after a major (> 40%) water change, use 1 capful of Flourish Excel (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 US gallons). Thereafter, use 1 capful for every 200 L (50 US gallons) daily or every other day. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL.
- SAFETY: Flourish Excel is completely safe for fish, however if you have Anacharis in an aquarium in which you are dosing Flourish Excel, then it is recommended to use it every other day rather than daily.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What causes this product to kill algae, and does it kill anything else (like beneficial bacteria)?**
A: I bought the Seachem Flourish Excel because it seems to be the best solution to a Black Beard Algae problem I'm having, and after studying what it does, and how it does it, I too was worried about the Beneficial Bacteria in my 2 large canister filters.Couldn't find a direct answer to that question, so I sent an e-mail directly to Seachem Laboratories. Here is my question to them and their reply......
Message: I have a 72 gal heavily planted community tank and am having an outbreak of Black Beard Algae. I purchased your product as it seems the best solution to the problem, but I need a question answered before I can use your product. I now understand how your product works, but will this product also kill off the Beneficial Bacteria inside the Seachem Matrix Bio-Media of my 2 large canister filters?! Crashing the cycle in my tank is not an option. Is this product (Flourish Excel) safe to use for the bacteria that maintains the nitrogen cycle of my tank, or will it kill the bacteria in my filter media along with the Black Beard Algae and crash the nitrogen cycle of my tank? Need a straight answer, please, Thank You

Hi there, thanks for reaching out!
No, Excel will not affect your biological filtration if dosed appropriately.
 Hope this helps!
Seachem Support 10304
Needless to say, I am very relieved, and pleased. Now I can start the process of getting rid of that Black Beard Algae and not worry about crashing my nitrogen cycle. 2 Thumbs Up to Seachem Laboratories!

**Q: are they copper free?**
A: No. They contain 0.001% copper. Though people have used them in shrimp tanks without a problem, others have had shrimp die, particularly if the tablet got stirred up from the substrate (rescaping, fish burrowing, etc). If there's a chance of your substrate being disturbed, I'd recommend going with API Root Tabs instead, as they do not contain copper.

**Q: How I use this for my tank 20 gallons**
A: Per the instructions:
"On initial use or after a major (> 40%) water change, use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 US gallons). Thereafter use 1 capful for every 200 L (50 US gallons) daily or every other day. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL."
1 cap = 5ml
1 cap for every 50 gallon equates to 1 ml for every 10 gallons or 2 ml for 20 gallons.

**Q: Is the product compatible with freshwater invertebrates, like amano shrimp?**
A: I use this product on a regular basis and I have snails and shrimp in my tank. No problems.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fight Algae
*by C***I on March 1, 2015*

Flourish Excel is a liquid source of CO2 for your aquarium plants. Regular addition of Excel will help your plants thrive inside your tank. This is a good option for those who do not wish to add a mechanical CO2 injection system to their tank. An added benefit of using Excel is that it discourages the growth of algae. I have had very good results with my aquatic plants since I started using Excel. Even plants that are hard to grow, like Dwarf Hairgrass, thrive when using a combination of very high light levels and Flourish Excel. I have not noticed any adverse effects on the fish. Will Excel completely prevent the growth of algae? No, it will not. It discourages algae growth, but will not prevent it completely. With a good tank maintenance routine, spare use of fertilizers, ideal light levels, and Seachem Excel, you should be able to manage algae. You will still get algae, but not to the point where it takes over your tank. Seachem Flourish Excel is one of the best products you can get for a planted fish tank. Even if you already have a CO2 injection system, you can still use Excel. You will naturally have to play around with dosing. Having said all of that, regular dosing of Excel can get expensive if you have a very large tank with a lot of fast-growing plants. Then again, an automated CO2 injection system will also set you back a lot of money. You can try and find cheaper sources of liquid CO2, like some aquarists have done and are using surgical instrument sterilizers. However, you need to know what you are doing and will naturally have to play around with dosages and concentration. If you have a small tank, say less than 75 gallon, your best choice would simply be to use Excel. This is an excellent, excellent product. Algae is one of the banes of aquarium keeping. To find a product that not only encourages plant growth, but also discourages algae, is a double blessing. This is one of the most useful advances in aquarium-keeping in recent times. Highly recommended.
