REED Leather HIDES - Cow Skins (100 Square Foot, Whiskey)

Despite what other reviews might try to claim, this really comes from animal hides. However, it's not what you would normally get when you order a cow hide for several times the price. I wanted leather to sew seat covers for my car and it was perfect. Some things you should know before ordering:1 - Size. I ordered 40 square feet after some experience with smaller quantities. Why? Because I measured what I needed and came up with roughly 27 to 30 square feet (while I could only really use roughly 25). It would have been enough had I designed my seat covers to sew together 6+ smaller pieces for one seat, but I planned on 2 or 3, so I came up short, with some scraps I can use to make a handbag. I don't know how leather is measured, but count on getting about half the square footage in usable material unless you plan on sewing every tiny scrap together, in which case you can count on roughly 75%.2 - Weight/Thickness. This leather has been thinned so that it's the weight needed for making clothes. The suede layer has been removed. It's too thin for upholstery or structured handbags. It's more flexible, easier to cut and sew and about the weight of denim. Still being leather though, it's denser and tougher, so still use leather sewing machine needles and keep them sharp. In order to have the leather hang correctly, I had to buy a soft structure material, which also made it easier to insert memory foam padding in the seat covers.3 - Quality: The leather I received could be described as somewhat distressed. Some sections were nice and smooth and others were pocked and or had cracking. If you look at the supplier's products on Amazon, you'll see that they sell leather jackets and other clothing. My guess is that the leather they sell is excess volume and/or quality rejects. It is already colored and prepared to be sewn into clothing, so don't plan on coloring, branding or treating it yourself in any way. Also, among the three pieces I received, it was clear from looking at the backs that they came from 2 different dye lots so I had to use pieces from the different lots so that they weren't next to each other.After the car seat covers were sewn (leather and stretch denim), I conditioned the leather and it's absolutely beautiful. This leather was much easier to work with than a heavier full grain and it was already dyed for what I wanted. My suggestion is to follow the advice the supplier gave me (after returning twice) and order a box of scraps to get an idea of colors and weight. The investment is well worth it. Also, measure what you need and order twice the square footage if you plan on using larger pieces or expect a perfect finish.

This is not real leather. I will say that again THIS IS NOT REAL LEATHER IT IS PLEATHER. While not alway a big issue it is when it comes to laser cutting. Real leather is perfectly ok to laser and quite commonly cut. Pleather on the other hand releases Chlorine Gas when it is cut. Long story short after cutting a few pieces my eyes started to water as shortly after lungs were burning. DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU PLAN ON CUTTING IT WITH A LASER.

The leather piece is beautiful and big enough to cover the large desk top we refinished. Thanks for picking one out that works great for us.

Piece was thinner than I expected, but since I'm new to leather working, I didn't really know what I was ordering. It's got a little stretch to it so I couldn't use it for what I wanted. It is super soft and flexible. Suppose it'd be good for covering a chair seat or making a coin pouch or something?

This is What I BOUGHT: REED LEATHER HIDES - COW SKINS VARIOUS COLORS & SIZES (12 X 24 Inches 2 Square Foot, GRAY)What I received is 2 pieces of leather 11.3/4" by 8 and maybe 1/2"COMPLETELY USELESS to what I was going to do.My Dad has died, so I cannot ask him, what 2 square foot REALLY IS.But I HOPED 12"x 24" was actually 12" wide and 24" long.I HATE Spending my hubby's Hard Earned Money on S{H}IT...Then my son is in my head, Be careful what you buy online.OVER ALL RATING?????The ONE Star THEY FORCED OUT of me. Beautiful, nice quality! I am reupholstering my mom's old dining chairs. The first one came our great (only 9 more to go!). I am a little concerned that I don't have enough for my project and will have to order again with the possibility of a different dye lot. That being said, I have normal expectations that each piece of leather is unique. There are a couple of pitted areas, but I left them in. Adds character. I would definitely order again!

This product was received as described and it worked very well for my purposes. It was a little thinner than I'd expected but the description was accurate, I just overlooked it. I created a traveler's notebook and have received numerous compliments. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Is it leather? I don't think so. My piece smelled funny, not at all like leather. I needed it to make a book. When I used an awl to make holes, they closed up instantly- not permanently, but not at all like leather would, where you can actually see the hole you punched. I ended up using it because I was under a deadline. The finished product was okay, but it lacks the beautiful look and feel of natural leather.I messaged the seller, but they didn't message back. Ever.

The quality of the product is fantastic, however I live in the UK and was unaware at time of purchase that this product was being shipped from the USA, probably my fault for not noticing but getting slapped with a £20 import fee by the royal mail after already paying for delivery was quite annoying.

Reed 12x24 inch Black hide - True to size, soft leather, appears uniform thickness, no blemishes & no strong unpleasant odour, smells like leather. Only query, in section it appears to be two layers bonded together, could be wrong, under side is also black...not sure it would be hard wearing enough for a seat base, light usage functions I.e. table top, pouch, liner, tool roll, etc....would buy again if need arose....

I orderd the brown 12x24" sheet as this was the only one in the UK and it was exactly sized and high quality leather perfect for my needs.will definatley order from here again, i just wish there was more items from the diverse selection here in the UK as 14.99 shipping and waiting several weeks is a big put offvery satisfied highly reccomend

Patching

Not a bad piece of leather. I bought it for the lining of holsters and the like but, once bought, decided it was too good, so I’m saving it for any future project where it’s thickness etc is appropriate.
