Review: My bearded dragon comes running - Recently adopted a bearded dragon. The person that gave him to me was feeding him meal worms- which after some research I found are not the best thing to feed a very young beardie because they cause a condition caused impaction due to their chitinous shell, so I decided to get the little guy some crickets. When I read about their feeding requirements I almost fell out of my chair -some experts say that young bearded dragons require 30-50 small crickets PER DAY to achieve proper growth. But the idea of housing and feeding hundreds of live crickets in my apartment was too much. So i decided to take a chance with some dead ones. I was shocked at how much my bearded liked them. He's like a bottomless pit- he wont stop eating them unless I stop offering. So I give him 7-10 at a time 2-3 times a day and occasionally give him some mashed butternut squash and greens. He's a happy camper. He gets his protein, and I dont have to chase escaped crickets around the house. It's a win/win. The crickets are very very small (1/4"-1/3"). If your dragon likes hunting, use a pair of dull tweezers to dangle them above it's head. The can is resealable and comes with a small plastic spoon. What you're really paying for here is convenience, and you really get your money's worth.
Review: Great alternative to live crickets! - I hate feeding live insects--I know it's debatable whether or not they feel pain, but I don't like to see anything suffer & I think it is stressful for them to be hunted. I do animal rescue & ended up with two African Fat Tailed geckos & a leopard gecko. I was distraught to feed them live crickets & super worms, but then I discovered these canned crickets. One of the fat tails & the leo gobbles them up great. Unfortunately, the other fat tail refuses to eat anything that's not alive, but it still lessens the number of live animals I'm having to feed, not to mention it's much easier than dealing with a tank of stinky feeder insects! I keep the can in the fridge for a few days once opened & then move it to the freezer & it lasts me about a month to feed the two lizards every other day. They look great & have had no health issues.
