It is not very helpful that, on most dishwashers, the compartment dedicated to being filled with "rinse aid" is very suspicious: it is not clear that it is water-tight, it seems like you fill it up and the "rinse aid" leaks out; and depending on models it is not always clear when the "rinse aid" tank is filled or not. Here are the issues what using the "rinse aid" as indicated helped me avoid (ranked by level of annoyance): 1) Generally not shiny silverware. 2) White mineral spots on silverware and dishes. 3) The feeling that silverware is covered in dust or residue. 4) Enormous puddles of water on just about every plastic surface in the dishwasher. Indeed, I found out the "rinse aid" (I have been using quotes because I think it is a poor choice of name, it is a "drying agent") helps with all those problems, even surprisingly the issue of water puddles, because it essentially disperses the factor by preventing it from coalescing into big drops.
