I didn't know anything about switches, CAT6, POE, access points or patch panels before looking at this. I just ran the CAT6 (or CAT5) cable from the router to a patch panel, patch panel to any of the ports on this switch, then connected all my other jacks that were ran to the patch panel from various rooms of my house. Couple of things to consider before purchasing are 1. All the ports are on the front right side so I had to use longer cables to reach the left side of patch panels. 2. My older rack is too narrow once the brackets were installed on the switch to allow the unit to slide all the way in.
