If you are only setting a few there is another way to cut out the hole without using the punch. You can take one of the eyelets and press it into the fabric leaving an impression in the fabric. This works particularly well for Sunbrella fabric. After the impression is in place you can take a small sharp pocket knife and cut a small hole where the "teeth" of the eyelets will go. At that point I would put the eyelet into place and put the backing plate and fold the "teeth" to secure the eyelet into place. In the past I have also used a small battery operating soldering iron instead of a packet knife to achieve the same effect. Now that the eyelet is where you want it you will need to cut out the center portion. The pocket knife works well for this purpose. The soldering iron also works well for this purpose because it helps to burnish or sear the fabric so that it won't unravel. Maybe, 3/4x5/8 on the outer dimension. **Q: Will these eventually tear out via bent metal leg or are they pretty rugged? Looking to make cover for sailboat** A: I used them to make a tonneau cover extension for a motorcycle sidecar, attaching them to leather straps. Drilled out old riveted turn button in less than 1 second and drilled two small holes through fiberboard backing on felt bag to allow new turn button legs to pass through. When the bag felt material was compressed with a flat screw driver tip, the legs extended through the material and backing enough to be bent over and adequately secure the small metal backing plate included with the turn button. This would be done at no additional cost according to the note. Because I was attaching these to a reinforced part of a sail cover for my boat, I decided to request the longer prongs. As promised, the fasteners arrived with a note on the receipt that the longer prong version of the fastener male and female pieces had been provided. The quality is very good and I recommend them to anyone needing a high-quality turn button & eyelet fastening system for their boat or RV. No special tools are needed to install them.
