## Description

desertcart.com : Magpul MBUS PRO Steel Backup Sights, Front Sight Black : Red Dot Sights : Sports & Outdoors

Review: Great Backup Irons - I purchased this along with the matching front sight. My primary requirement was something made of steel because the front sight was to be mounted on a gas block and needed to be able to withstand the heat. I wanted something that could fold down so that they wouldn't be in the way when using optics, and, naturally, something that would hold zero. One of the main reasons I chose the Magpul MBUS Pros is because I've used the excellent Magpul MBUS sights. One of the things that really impressed me about the original MBUS sights was their ability to hold zero. The other thing that impressed me was that they didn't seem to have any other major problems either(ie, randomly deploying). The other reasons I chose these sights were that they are made of steel, Magpul has a great reputation for producing quality products(my personal experience with Magpul products being quite positive), and they were reasonably priced. Unlike the MBUS, these do not have any form of automatic deployment(no push button pop-up). These are lower-profile than the MBUS. Most notably, they are much narrower. The profile of the rear sight makes it fit within the area above the charging handle latch on an M4 upper without any protrusion, which is very nice. Their low profile means they do not interfere with mounting options for optics. Both front(elevation) and rear(windage) sights are finger adjustable. The adjustments are fairly stiff - not so stiff that they are impossible to use, but enough so that I have no worries about anything moving over time. Also different from the MBUS, these are a melonite finished steel. The steel construction means they can stand up to the heat of being mounted on a gas block. I'm not terribly familiar with the melonite finish, but from what I gather it's supposed to be fairly durable. The rear sight contains both large and small apertures, and is relatively easy to switch between the two. Four days ago I did a rough zero at 100 yards with these sights. Three days ago I ran a local three gun match using only these sights. Things tend not to get treated particularly well in three gun, so I think it makes a great proving ground. I didn't have any problems with changes in point of impact throughout the match, even between cold(beginning) and hot(end)(approximately 120 rounds throughout the match). The last of five stages involved steels at 100(x4), 300(x2), 400(x2), and 500(x2) yards. In 100 seconds I was able to score hits on all but the last steel at 500 yards using these sights(and I think I hit the first steel at 500 twice). I used the same gun in all of the preceding stages, meaning it had been moved between the rack and the case at each stage, and dumped four times prior to being used to engage targets at range. Over all I am very happy with their performance, and they certainly live up to the reputation that Magpul has garnered.
Review: I really wanted to love this sight...Now I do! - UPDATE: I just ordered another one and am happy to report this new MBUS Pro rear sight is excellent. It performs like a champ, lives small on the rail, and snaps to attention where and only as commanded. Buy without hesitation and if you sense any issues, phone home to the Magpul mothership ASAP. Below is my original 2 star review retained here for historical, cautionary, and amusement purposes only. ----------------------- I really wanted to love this MBUS Pro, but it won't, or maybe even can't attach tight enough to the rail. One side of the base is an immovable rail grab. The other side is 2/3s immovable rail grab and 1/3 adjustable. That results in a slight twisting of the sight when mounted. But the real deal killer is that the sight actually rotates back and forth slightly. I tried I it on several rail locations on two different guns and had the same result everywhere. At first, I wondered if I got a counterfeit one, but this one has all the markings including a cage number, number in a circle, and a magpul inscribed screw head. It also had the nice packaging I'd seen pictures of online. I was ready to call magpul to see if I got a dud, but looking closely at the design of the mount base, unless the rail fits so tightly into the immovable sections of the rail grab, this sight cannot be straight or snug. It basically tightens on only one small portion of the rail. This is just a guess but the base design of the Pro is similar to the polymer MBUS (which I also have plenty of experience with). The base of both types of sights is roughy square. On the MBUS, the polymer fits quite snuggly on the rail prior to tightening due to the elasticity of the plastic combined with being slightly narrower than the rail width. However, the non-moving rail grabbing edges on the metal Pro cannot be narrower or it would not fit at all. So the corner of the square that is adjustable does two things. First, it locks in a rotation point that the sight moves around, and second it clamps the rail tighter than the rest of the sight base meaning its tiny rail footprint is all that is holding the sight secure. On the polymer MBUS, the initial inserting of the tight fit is already much stronger, and then the larger footprint of moving rail grab tightens it even more restricting all motion and rotation. The guess here is that a design that works with a tight fitting polymer does not successfully transfer to a metal design. Instead, the Pro should have either give the adjustable rail grab a much larger rail footprint, or placed it in the middle of the sight instead of the corner, or even make two adjustable grabs to torque the square holding it perfectly centered and above all perfectly still. Other than that, this is a great sight of superb build quality and function. I knew that being an early adopter of this sight would be a risk. It was. I'll give it another try when the Gen 2 version of this sight comes out. Magpul's foray into metal BUIS is a work in progress. They absolutely nailed the form and function. Now they just need to find a way to nail the sight to the rifle. *Note: All of the above is said with the upmost respect in Magpul as a company and innovator.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this sit at the same hight as a fixed front sight?**
A: Yes. Exactly perfect for the F A2 front sight post. Picatinny railed gas blocks are not the same height though and you would have to use something else. It also works on Free float rails.

**Q: Will this work on the gas blocks that are lower than the rail on the upper reciever?**
A: No. Keep it on the rail, don't put it on the gas block if the gas block rail is lower. Your sights won't line up like they should if you do.

**Q: Do you get solid "clicks" when you adjust the elevation dial? If so, anyone know how many Clicks per MOA?**
A: The clicks are positive. Magpul states the following in the instructions: "Each click adjusts the POI ~1.13 (1 1/8) inches at 100 meters for a typical M4-type Carbine. Your results may vary depending on your weapon and the rail position of your sights (sight radius)." 100 meters is about 109 yards, so I'm guessing it's closer to 1 inch at 100 yards.

**Q: can someone explain "co-witness" . Got a Colt ar15 and want to put a red dot on it. Everybody seems to talk about co witness?? help!**
A: UNDERSTANDING CO-WITNESS Please post comments here. INTRO: Since this topic comes up quite a bit, I decided to put something together to help out anyone that is having a little trouble understanding the differences and to help to choose the right one. This will apply to AR-15 rifles, and more specifically to iron sights, red dot sights, and the low powered variable scopes (1x4 scopes) in tactical applications, not precision shooting. ABSOLUTE/REGULAR CO-WITNESS: This means that the reticle and the iron sights will line up. The irons and the red dot are pretty much the same height. I say pretty much because there is no such thing as "ABSOLUTE". The height for Iron sights is just under 2.6". Most of the Absolute/Regular Co-Witness mounts on the market such as Larue, ADM, Bobro, etc, are actually around 2.75", which is close enough to the iron sight height. LOWER 1/3 CO-WITNESS: This is where the iron sights appear in the lower 1/3 window/section of the optic. Most of the Lower 1/3 Co-Witness mounts on the market such as Larue, ADM, Bobro, etc, are around 3". FRONT AND REAR FLIP-UP BUIS: Front and rear flip-up BUIS is the most versatile set-up and gives you the greatest flexibility. BCM-URG-MID-14%20TR&.jpg FRONT AND REAR FIXED BUIS: These are generally the lightest, simplest, and generally the most rugged. c4cd4e0379a66e0736.jpg FIXED FRONT/FLIP-UP REAR BUIS: This is one of the most popular set-ups because most AR's come with the fixed front sight base, which is pinned and very rugged. IMG_0399002_..jpg DETERMINING THE PROPER CO-WITNESS: Now that I explained some of the terms and some of the different available options, let's determine the best height to use. If you read some of these types of threads, you will read where guys will post that the lower 1/3 co-witness is best because it allows you to keep your head in a more upright position, which is ideal for CQB type work. The upright head position, IMHO, is the correct position. Unfortunately, we are not 1-size fits all. In other words, we are not all 6'3" tall. I learned that the hard way and it cost me $200 in mounts. I have always used the absolute/regular co-witness because it was very comfortable for me. My head was in the upright position when I shoot with irons or with the Aimpoint or EOTech with an absolute/regular co-witness. So one day I purchased an Aimpoint and was talked into getting the lower 1/3 mount because my head would be in an upright position. My first range session with these lower 1/3 co-witness mounts, proved to be a huge mistake. I was no longer able to even get a cheek weld position. It was more like a chin weld position. And shooting from the prone was very painful for my neck because I had to lift up my head to obtain a proper "chin weld" position. My friend on the other hand had no problem with the lower 1/3 mounts. I'm 5'7" tall and he's 6'2" tall. So what I recommend to determine what the best height FOR YOU is without going out and spending a couple of hundred dollars on mounts is to just look through your iron sights and determine where your head is. If you look through your irons and you r head is relatively upright, then you may want to go with the absolute/regular co-witness mounts. I should mention that the sight height is more critical when using a magnifier or a regular scope. When I just use an Aimpoint or EOTech, even if it is in the lower 1/3 co-witness, it isn't that much of a problem for me because the reticle in the red dot scopes floats around. Confused yet? It gets better. What if you use fixed front and rear BUIS or a fixed front and flip-up rear BUIS? Then you to deal with another factor that doesn't exist with the flip-up front and rear BUIS. Some people, no matter how hard they try, they just can't get used to having the front sight in the way. It can be very annoying, especially with a regular 1x4 scope because the reticle just sits right on top of the front sight post. At least with a red dot, you can slightly raise your head and the reticle will clear the front sight post and not be as annoying. CONCLUSION: If you have/use the front and rear flip-up BUIS, I recommend that you just determine what height is best for you based on your head position. If you have a fixed front BUIS/Sight, you have to first determine the proper height based on your head position, and then, if you determine that you would be better off with the absolute/regular co-witness height, then you have to determine if you can put up with the front sight being in the way.
