Jean Haines' World of Watercolour

Extremely helpful
I have read many watercolor books. Now that I understand the materials and the basics, this book was the most helpful so far to help me strike out on my own. I don't expect to paint just like Jean Haines, nor should I. What I loved about this book was that she did not instruct us to copy exactly what she does, but she explained her own process.

Free style watercolor
Love her approach to painting. She captures the essence of her subject and then stops the painting without overdoing it. Creates beautiful vibrant paintings.

A keeper that I believe will reread several times.
Not only instructional but inspirational. I'm just a dabbler in watercolor painting, but love the way Jean Haines paints. Reading her book has improved my dabbling in my eyes and I've been making time for painting and/or drawing daily. One of the easiest and best changes I made after reading and doing the exercises in the book was holding my brush loosely and softly stroking the paper. I used to be one of those who held her breath as she painted. Now painting is a much more relaxing activity for me.

Nice reference book
Nice reference book. It's fun to learn watercolor freedom from Jean Haines. Her dvd is the very best, however.

Wonderful watercolor book
Beautiful book! I have quite a collection of watercolor books, from beginner to advanced, and this is definitely one of my all-time favorites! Absolutely gorgeous artwork, and she explains how she got the effects that are so lovely and loose. She includes exercises that she advises to do before working on your masterpiece, on a daily basis; like warming up before a workout. She includes lots of easy to follow instructions; not how to make the same painting that she made, but how to achieve a similar look for your own original work. This is my first book by Jean Haines, but it will certainly not be my last. I highly recommend it, whether you are a beginner, a novice, or an experienced watercolorist.

You will be blown away by this amazing book. Even the bees love it! While I sat reading next to my garden a bee landed on a flower in my book but eventually it flew away, frustrated, to the real thing. I recently began painting with the usual pencil sketches, masking fluid and composition rules. My yellow crowned night heron looked exactly like my photo, but it seemed flat and boring. Jean's free stiyle is a breath of fresh air.

Beautiful impressionistic watercolor studies
Lovely book. Great painting philosophy and good lessons. This may not be for someone who has never watercolored, but it could be as long as you are comfortable with impressionism and aren't looking to be a perfectionist realistic painter. She does give good instruction, but you might want to study Chinese brush painting a bit before you get involved with this. I"m a beginner, but have read and tried some Chinese brush painting. I'm also happy with impressionism and getting just one part of a flower right and figure all the rest will come as I keep practicing. She does gorgeous color work. Highly recommend.

Inspirational
Jean Haines is a captivating artist. This book is a wonderful walk through watercolour painting for both the novice and the more seasoned artist. Jean demonstrates techniques such as watercolour washes and how to use colour / water / movement effectively. No pre sketch just a wonderful nudge to throw away the rule book and work instinctively. I have read reviews that say it is too difficult - not at all! Read, forget the rules and take it slow. I have painted as an amateur for many years. This taught me to unlearn the rules and trust the process.Allow the viewer to be drawn to really look at the composition. Get rid of clutter and simplify the subject. It is such a joy to pain this way and the finished piece will be delightful.I truly hope that you will try this method there are DVDs to complement the book plus tips and a relaxed enjoyable session. Jean also has an online classroom to inspire anyone to grab the paint brushes and get painting. Above all ..Enjoy
