Designed for professional illustrators and artists, it offers superior precision, archival quality, and compatibility with various mixed media techniques. Crafted in the USA with FSC-certified materials, it ensures warp resistance and a flawless surface for hyper-realistic scratchboard art. ## Description Scratchbord is the professional scratchboard surface trusted by award-winning illustrators, wildlife artists, and realism artists worldwide. Built on Ampersand’s premium Hardbord protected with Archiva-Seal and coated with an ultra-smooth kaolin clay ground and rich black India ink, it delivers unmatched precision for subtractive drawing, engraving-style illustration, sgraffito, and high-contrast artwork. Scratch through the black surface to reveal the white clay beneath, creating detail and tonal depth impossible to achieve on canvas, black canvas boards, black painting panels, or painted black wood panels. Unlike traditional art canvases or generic black art boards, Scratchbord is engineered specifically for scratchboard drawing and produces clean, controlled marks for hyper-realistic fur, feathers, portraiture, and black-and-white realism. Built on a rigid, warp-resistant Hardbord core, it stays perfectly flat—never tearing, bending, buckling, or wrinkling like paper scratchboards or thin craft scratch surfaces. The clay-and-ink coating allows repeated mark-making, fine rescratching, and controlled shading using scratch knives, scalpels, tattoo needles, Slice craft knives, wire brushes, fiber brushes, and oil-free steel wool (tools sold separately). Artists can also incorporate ink, airbrush, collage, and mixed media, making Scratchbord a more versatile option than standard black canvases or MDF art boards. For vibrant color work, transparent Scratchbord/Claybord Inks (sold separately) add rich, vivid tones that remain luminous on the white clay. Highlights can be rescratched for contrast, and unwanted marks can be repaired using black India ink or Ampersand Black Repair Ink—giving artists full creative control without fear of mistakes. When artwork is complete, simply seal the panel with a spray varnish and frame it without glass. Ampersand Floaterframes and Duoframes offer a clean, glare-free, gallery-style presentation that showcases every etched detail. Scratchbord reflects over 30 years of Ampersand’s dedication to museum-quality painting and drawing surfaces. Whether you’re a professional scratchboard artist or searching for a premium black drawing surface, black scratchboard panel, black art board, or black engraving panel, Scratchbord offers the most responsive, archival, and detail-focused surface available today. Handcrafted in the USA using FSC-certified materials. For beginners exploring scratchboard art, Ampersand also offers Scratchbord Kits that include a Scratchbord panel, tool, pattern, and instructions (sold separately) Review: Awesome scratchboard quality! New favorite medium. - I bought this as an alternative to working on black paper, and it has been a completely different experience in the best way. The black is deep and crisp, and the contrast you get when scratching through to the white underneath is really striking. I was brand new to scratchboard when I started, so there was definitely a learning curve. I normally create by drawing onto a surface, and scratching into one feels surprisingly different. Metal scratching tools were not very intuitive for me at first. They can skip a little, and the board is very pressure sensitive. The good news is that you do not need to press hard at all to remove the black surface, but it also does not feel like the coating scratches off accidentally with normal handling. I honestly did not love the feel of the process at first, but both the board and the technique really grew on me as I learned how to work with them. So far, my favorite piece of art I have created was made on this board using Ampersand scratching tools. I am still very much a beginner with scratchboard, but this has made me want to keep exploring the medium. Review: Top quality - Love these boards. I only use these for my Scratchboard artwork as they are the best quality boards. They arrived in tact, no scratches or dents and on time. ## Features - Premium quality scratchboard for creating white on black scratches - Claybord that is evenly coated with India ink - Frame without glass once sealed - pH neutral and acid free - 9 x 12 inches - 1/8 inch depth ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B001CRYUQA | | Best Sellers Rank | #18,458 in Arts, Crafts & Sewing ( See Top 100 in Arts, Crafts & Sewing ) #13 in Scratchboard Art Materials | | Brand | Ampersand Art Supply | | Brand Name | Ampersand Art Supply | | Color | 1/8 Inch Depth | | Customer Reviews | 4.7 out of 5 stars 766 Reviews | | Item Dimensions L x W | 12"L x 9"W | | Item Highlight | Professional Scratchboard Art Panel with Clay & India Ink Surface | For Scratchboard Drawing, Illustration & Mixed Media | | Item Type Name | Museum Series Scratchboard | | Item Weight | 8 ounces | | Manufacturer | Ampersand Art Supply | | Manufacturer Part Number | CBB09 | | Material | Wood, Kaolin Clay, India Ink | | Material Type | Wood, Kaolin Clay, India Ink | | Model Number | CBB09 | | Number of Items | 1 | | Number of Packs | 1 | | Paint Type | India ink | | Product Dimensions | 12"L x 9"W | | Shape | rectangular | | Size | 9X12 | | UPC | 707310020918 | | Unit Count | 1 Count | | Warranty Description | No Warranty | ## Product Details - **Brand:** Ampersand Art Supply - **Color:** 1/8 Inch Depth - **Item Weight:** 8 ounces - **Material:** Wood, Kaolin Clay, India Ink - **Product Dimensions:** 12"L x 9"W ## Images ![Ampersand Scratchbord | 9x12 | 1/8" Flat | Professional Scratch Art Panel - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61EBeGmOR0L.jpg) ![Ampersand Scratchbord | 9x12 | 1/8" Flat | Professional Scratch Art Panel - Image 2](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/7107ujYJ2CL.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Size** options. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Awesome scratchboard quality!
