Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper

Fabulous and Fun
I had to read this book for a sexual philosophy class in college. I am severely dyslexic and have intense ADD so reading any book cover to cover is always a daunting task...but not with this book. First chapter into it I couldn't put it down. I read it an hour a day straight (which is a lot for a learning disabled person) until I finished the book. I am from Minnesota (which is where the book is based) and her true to life explanations and experiences in the Twin Cities were so true to her descriptions. I am by no means a stripper or don't even know any personally, but I am an extremely sexually liberated individual so I had a kick out of reading this book. I mean absolutely no offense to anyone anywhere by this (heck, I am from ultra conservative Lutheran Minnesota) ...but from all the others I know who have read it I have found those that don't like it are those who are less liberated sexually, or are intimidated or possibly embarrassed by some of her experiences and the depth she goes into explaining them. But, if you are an open minded, free-thinking person you will definitely find some joy in it. Even if some of her stories are crazy or wacky (and sometimes disgusting), they are entertaining as all heck. I have been to most of the places she talks about and laughed so hard at the inner-workings she experienced through her experiences. I also found it a great coming to (not of) age book as it was at a time in her life (24-25) where she took complete personal empowerment and made a huge change with the understanding that soon she would be too old to act wild and crazy (she grew up very conservative) before she had to be "a real adult". I went through a nearly exact emotional experience at the exact same age so I was able to relate to her particularly well. I love that her boyfriend is amazingly supportive of her endeavors because he believes in her dreams and wishes and "sees the value of gold" in her. I also love that her boyfriend (in the end her husband) is portrayed as an amazing single/divorced dad. It was so refreshing to see a portrayal of a young father so positive and loving. She speaks frankly in a casual tone as if she is speaking to her best friend. She writes with incredible knack for detail, it's very vivid reading. It is an easy read and doesn't use crazy unusual industry slang or terms without explaining them (and then it is still used seldom). I actually have to write my final paper on this book and I've never been so excited to write a final paper for a class (and I'm a senior in college). It's gonna be a fun and entertaining paper to write based on her fabulous book. I can't say enough good things about it.LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. Every liberated, free thinking, crazy story seeking person should read it. Pure enjoyment!

Good book
I LOVE books and stories of peoples lives. I read this book in about a week. She had an adventure, for sure! Oh, how I relate to the 9-5 job killing her soul and boring her to death. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is: there were times the writer just lost me, particularly in the 1st quarter of the book. I didn't know what she was talking about at times. And it gets wordy occasionally. I felt like halfway through the book the writers style changed a little bit and for the better. Sometimes I skipped over words because it dragged out what she was trying to say.Halfway through the book is where I started getting sucked in and didnt put the book down. She has had quite an experience. And I think she found a part of herself that owned her sexuality and her power by the end of the book. I find that exhilarating! Yes girl!

Behind the scenes at strip clubs
Engaging read though it starts a bit slow until she goes to an amature strip night and tries out. Decides she wants to look into it more. She does well with words, she works in an office handling writing, she has moved to MN to be with her boyfriend who is actually married.Goes through the experiences at differnet clubs and how they work. Talks about names gals use, back-stage in-fighting and the way the managers treat the gals. Also about the VIP. She ends up doing 'Girl in a Box' and reports on the oddities involved in that. She gets back into dancing but after a year of the sex industry work she has had enough and gets out. Similar to Bare: The Naked Truth About Stripping (Live Girls) as she is a middle-class gal who is a writer who it appears decides to dance and then write about it and gets a book deal. I did laugh a bit, she is a wordsmith and witty. Her boyfriend is very supportive, sounds like a good guy.

eye opening and sincere at the same time
If this be true it is worth being read by many, and embraced by the very few strong enough to survive and lucky enough to snag their own Johnny!

Not so sweet
For full disclosure, I did not finish this book. And I probably never will. So, I am giving it a three to be fair and as objective as possible. This book was not my cup of tea, but not because of the subject matter. The plot is fine, and I figured that it might be hilarious. After all, I am a fan of Diablo Cody's and overall, I have generally liked her screenplays. "Jennifer's Body" in my opinion was quite underrated; I found that to be hilarious dark comedy. I'm not sure why it wasn't received in a more positive light. "Juno," while being very good, gives us a hint of what this book is like at least in dialog.I watched and read in the following order: "Juno," "Jennifer's Body," and then (unfinished) "Candy Girl." While I liked "Juno" overall, I found the dialog difficult to understand, which is understandable since Ms. Cody seems to create her own dictionary of words. That is fine, but after awhile, it can get a bit grating since it requires the audience to continually decipher meaning. But then we have "Candy Girl."Now this book really goes over the top with nonexistent words, or at least words that I've never heard before. I bought this for the Kindle and the dictionary didn't seem to know their meanings as well. While it was cute at first, it quickly grew old and I just plain gave up. What started out as fun grew tiresome for me.This would be a "pass" on this book, but an "incomplete pass" at that since I read only half of the book.

candy crush strip fun
Got to this book rather late, I think because of Juno I was expecting holywood twee but this is a great memoirs to read in one go. I fell in love with Diablo , she is not afraid to describe the more sordid and sickly moments . There are a lot of bad books out there about working in sex industry , this isn't one of them.

Sehhhhr interessant
