Just be careful if you have very small goldfish because they can get sucked up by these things but if you keep at least a couple of feet away from any fish then you won't have any problems. **Q: I have a lot of sludge floating on the surface of my pond will it tackle this** A: Yes, but only if you want to empty the pond water into the hedge ( or similar). There is no facility for returning the filtered water back to the pond. I returned mine for a refund...too expensive and didn't do what I wanted..which was to filter the sludge without 'losing' the water. **Q: How deep can it function and how long is the arm for suction? It is for a swimming pond** A: I use it for a garden pond that is around 3 feet deep.
