This book is awesome, even though the recipes are very heavy in animal products and I have hot eaten red meat in over 40 years. I am a MD and have practiced medicine for over 48 years. Her science is exceptionally profound and adds to all of my prior reading. I have read over 300 books in the last three years, all pertaining to this subject. If I had to pick one book this would be it. I can make my own recipes, without all the meat, which is not good. Her description of the cascading free radical damage to the unprotected brain and eyes is of particularly great significance and usefulness in understanding the explosive incidence of dementia in the US population. I cannot express how much I appreciate her work. I am 86 years old, in good health and work every day, including as the caregiver for my wife for the last 8 years. So I know a little about maintaining good health ad sanity in the face of adversity. Godspeed to all who tread here. Robert L Youngblood MD.

An an absolute must read for all!!!
This is a most fascinating book and I have reads scores of books on nutrition. Dr. Shanahan makes so many great points that are NEVER discussed or even known by 99.9999% of MDs. I should know as I am an MD. Nutrition is blown off by the medical establishment and medical schools as being totally irrelevant to health. Nothing is further from the truth. I agree with the doctor on almost everything but since I have been on a ketogenic diet for years and actually feel and look younger than I did 10 years ago, I think the upper limit of carbohydrate intake should be no more than 50 gms/day. The doctor addresses so many issues in this book. An amazing discussion on the spacing of children and a mother's nutrition is right on. She states that having kids in rapid succession is deleterious to the looks, brains, and health of the subsequent child. No obstetrician or family medicine doctor will ever tell you this since they are oblivious and do not know this. Of course there are exceptions to any rule but in general I believe this is true. I have pondered this idea regarding my own family and birth order. She also points out how "normal" levels of cholesterol and LDL are constantly lowered by the medical system in order to benefit big pharma and get as many people as possible on statins. Anyone who has really studied cholesterol/LDL knows this is not the culprit of cardiovascular disease but carbohydrate consumption that leads to hyperinsulinemia and then to insulin resistance which causes many diseases. This is an amazing and very interesting book! If everyone practiced the teachings in this book miraculous improvement in health would be obtained.

Only for the blind
I’m sorry but this book has so many places in which it contradicts itself and some observations border on the completely ridiculous. Given her qualifications I was hoping for more. I should stopped where she said the most beautiful people are the most successful. But I read ten pages more. Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg , Angela Merkel, And so many more are more admired for their brains than their looks. I left Stephen Hawking for the last. Seriously flawed book.

A Shallow, Disappointing Read
I was expecting to learn new and useful information on how to improve my health through understanding epigenetics. I couldn’t even get past the first thirty pages because of the author’s shallow, Eurocentric and utterly basic ideas of beauty and success. Her own obvious obsession with conventional ‘beauty’ stands in for genetic facts. It read like an Us Weekly article. I have returned my book and I do not recommend anyone who thinks critically get this book.

Deep Health Primer
I've been researching and learning about health for over 50 years and this is the best and most comprehensive book I've ever found on the subject of nutrition and health in general. The book is well written and interesting--not dry, not boring. I'm the kind of person that needs to know "why," it's not enough to tell me to do something without knowing why. In the case of health issues it is often times that the explanation is too technical to be understood by a layperson. Not so with this book. I love the information concerning cultures (health and long-lived) from around the globe. Combined with brief overviews of how our Paleo ancestors ate helps to understand how the typical American diet has devolved into a fast-food culture of easy and fast and how that is killing us. If you were alive in the 50s, you may remember that illness and disease were not widespread as they are today. Both sets of my grandparents lived into their 90s without having ANY hospital stays. One grandmother had 12 children and the other 4. They were bright and alert--no signs of dementia or alzheimers either. My great grandmother passed at 97, after her husband died, she lived alone and cooked, cleaned, and had a garden until the end. I have offered this detail for the benefit of the younger readers who have seen a very different picture of health in the general population of this country. We all pretty much know that sugar is detrimental to health and offers no nutrition or food value whatsoever, but I learned from "Deep Nutrition" that vegetable oil is poison and is a major cause of the deterioration of our brains. I could go on and on, but I know people are busy. This is a fabulous book for those that are looking for in-depth answers to their health issues and what to do to heal from years of bad eating habits. I would give it ten stars if that were possible.

Good but flawed
A lot of good information on nutrition, backed up with references, written by a doctor (as opposed to a journalist or celebrity like most of these books are). I would have given 5 stars but I have a few major issues with it:The obsession with how good nutrition makes you (and your children) more attractive, and thus be more successful in life (yes, this is mentioned); Comments like "if more women had written history books there'd be less focus on wars and more focus on historic healthy meals"... I actually almost used the book as kindling at this point! It sometimes feels like reading an infomercial, which is a shame (just look at Dr Cate's website to see what I mean), but if you can ignore that aspect of the book it is actually also full of good information, some of which I have adopted towards my own eating habits.

A must read. A tour de force.
This I found marvellous. I'm a keen student of this whole area for a few years, being a retired doctor with time on my hands. Much of what she recommends I've already implemented before reading the book with great benefit to my health, but there's so much more astounding material in this book on epigenetics, dietary history, the benefit of eating material from connective tissue etc.For someone interested in this area, this book is a must read. Full stop. It's very well written as well. You won't read it quickly as it's full of info.

Profound
I rarely write reviews this book deserves an exception as I found it incredibly interesting, well constructed and researched. Having read a lot of excellent detailed and researched books in this field, I consider myself to have a good understanding of diet and lifestyle - yet I learnt a lot from Deep Nutrition. With a big focus on processed vegetable oils and sugar (quite rightly so), there's some amazing information on the human genome, it's ability to 'learn' and pass onto our kids, subjects such as dynamic symmetry and traditional cultures' diets - all again deeply researched and well communicated. Profound.

If you should only read one book on nutrition, read this one!
Very thorough research from the authors, explanations are very clear (some of the science was a bit too advanced for me so I just skipped through it but people who want to understand the science behind nutrition will definitely get their money's worth).I started reading a lot about nutrition after being diagnosed with several food allergies and this book is the one that helped me the most. It's giving general explanations as well as very specific steps that can be implemented to reach better health through better eating. It really helps clarifying a lot of issues, especially since we are bombarded all around with conflicting messages (vegan, paleo, no gluten, fat free, calory counting etc etc). I recommend it to everybody I meet who is interested in nutrition.

A very sensible approach to help understand why we get sick today
I have not read many books yet within this subject however this is far the best yet in my opinion regarding to understand why certain type of foods and substances are harmful for long-term health.I can strongly recommend this for everyone who is trying to prevent any chronic disease including cancer, diabetes etc.Even though if I was already aware of the fact that sugar is harmful and cooking meat on the bone is beneficial, I still enjoyed reading this book. This book is much more than “losing weight” or “get healthy”.I am thankful for the deep explanation which helped me make conclusions in this very confusing world we living today.Say no more this is an excellent book and I can strongly recommend for all who prioritize wellbeing and health over anything or everything.
