After the massive success of The Street Fighter, the Toei Company decided to build a new karate series around a female lead, and cast a young actress who had appeared in a cameo role alongside her mentor Sonny Chiba. Still a teenager at the time, Etsuko Shihomi exploded onscreen in her first leading role and created a new character type: a tough fighter who was fierce, fearless, good-hearted, and decidedly non-sexualised, a departure from Toei’s typical formula. In 1974’s Sister Street Fighter, Shihomi is the half-Chinese, half-Japanese Li Koryu, who travels to Yokohama to investigate the disappearance of her brother, an undercover cop. Li discovers a smuggling ring run by a drug lord with his own personal army of deadly fighters, and must penetrate his evil lair with the help of a fellow karate master (played by Chiba). Shihomi and director Kazuhiko Yamaguchi (Wolf Guy) made two additional films based on the same character over the next year, Sister Street Fighter: Hanging By A Thread and Return Of The Sister Street Fighter, with a final unrelated follow-up (Sister Street Fighter: Fifth Level Fist) helmed by original Street Fighter director Shigehiro Ozawa appearing in 1976.Genre entertainment of the highest order, the Sister Street Fighter films are a wild ride through some of the best exploitation cinema Japan produced in the 1970s. Funky and over-the-top, filled with wall-to-wall action, and featuring some of the craziest villains ever depicted onscreen, the series embodies female power in a male-dominated genre and is a magnificent showcase for the physical presence and martial arts skills of its lead star.SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS:High Definition digital transfers of all four filmsHigh Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentationsOriginal uncompressed Japanese mono audioOriginal English dubbed audio for Sister Street FighterNew optional English subtitle translation for all four filmsEnglish SDH subtitles for the English dub for Sister Street FighterNew video interviews with actor Shinichi “Sonny” Chiba, director Kazuhiko Yamaguchi, and screenwriter Masahiro KakefudaOriginal Japanese theatrical trailers for all four filmsOriginal U.S. theatrical trailer for Sister Street Fighter, plus original English opening titles to the filmOriginal German theatrical trailer for Sister Street Fighter, plus original German opening titles to the filmStills and poster galleryReversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Kungfubob O’BrienFIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated booklet featuring writing on the series by Patrick Macias and a new essay on the U.S. release of Toei’s karate films by Chris Poggiali Review: Kicking Butt and Taking Names - As a lover of classic martial arts films, I was thrilled to get my hands on the "Sister Street Fighter Collection" on Blu-ray. This set contains four films featuring the iconic female fighter, Li Koryu, played by the incomparable Etsuko Shihomi. And let me tell you, these films do not disappoint. First off, the transfer on this Blu-ray set is fantastic. The picture quality is crisp and clear, with vibrant colors that really pop off the screen. And the sound design is equally impressive, with every punch and kick landing with satisfying impact. But the real stars of this collection are the films themselves. Each one is a masterclass in martial arts cinema, with exciting fight choreography and intense action sequences that will have you on the edge of your seat. And Etsuko Shihomi's performance as Li Koryu is simply unforgettable - she's a true force to be reckoned with, and her fight scenes are some of the most impressive I've ever seen. And while the action is certainly a highlight of these films, there's more to them than just thrilling fight scenes. The stories themselves are engaging and well-crafted, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. And the supporting cast is just as impressive as Shihomi, with standout performances from the likes of Sonny Chiba and Yasuaki Kurata. Of course, no martial arts film collection would be complete without some special features, and this set doesn't disappoint. The behind-the-scenes featurettes and interviews with the cast and crew provide fascinating insights into the making of these films, and the included booklet is a must-read for any fan of the genre. Overall, if you're a fan of martial arts films, the "Sister Street Fighter Collection" on Blu-ray is an absolute must-have. With its incredible action, engaging stories, and memorable performances, this set is a true gem of the genre. So don't hesitate - add it to your collection today and get ready to kick some serious butt. If you own the uncut DVDs, this is an upgrade
Sister Street Fighter is a terrific series of films that was released several years back uncut on DVD. The series stars Sonny Chiba's protege Etsuko Shiomi as Kuryo, known in the titles as Sister Street Fighter. You may have seen her in Golgo 13 or some of Chiba's other films. If you haven't viewed this series of movies, you're in for a treat. They spotlight a superb early female hero adept in martial arts that will wow the hell out of you. If you have seen the films, the Blu-Rays are cut above the DVDs and well worth the upgrade.

5 stars
Been waiting for years for the Street Fighter series to get a proper blu ray release. Giving it an advanced 5 stars to counteract the negative review left by the Brit who, not surprisingly, loves censorship.

During one of the more recent Arrow Video sales, I caught a trailer for the Sister Street Fighter collection. I didn't know what the heck it was but after that two minutes of being entertained, I decided to pick up this double disc collection for a tenner. The Sister Street Fighter collection comes in the usual plastic case. The first film from 1974 is on the first disc and the sequels Sister Street Fighter: Hanging By a Thread (1974) and The Return of the Sister Street Fighter (1975) as well as the unofficial sequel Sister Street Fighter: Fifth Level Fist (1976) are on the second disc. The artwork is pretty cool and like most Arrow Video releases, it's interchangeable with a cool inner sleeve. The films are presented as new 1080p prints. The extras features things like optional and newly translated English subtitles for all four films, as well as dubbing tracks, video interviews, isolated scores, theatrical trailers and so on. It's a pretty good looking bundle of goodies. Without looking them up and knowing very little about them before watching, it is very clear that these are exploitation films made to capitalise on the popularity of Bruce Lee and his series of films before his unfortunate death. Each film follows the same basic plot. Some bad guys are doing bad guy things, they capture a relative of Etsuko Shihomi and she goes out of her way to stop the bad guys and rescue her relative. It's for sure very basic but it seems to be intended that way as a suitable excuse for this beautiful but deadly lady to beat the snot out of every bad guy available. Whilst these films look and probably were done cheap, they are really good fun. They know what they want to be and do that very well. It's a little repetitive in places but the short run times make up for that. The action scenes are all quite fast paced and usually feature a lot of blood. There's a lot of odd posturing, swinging arms around and making Bruce Lee noises before each fight, which is quite amusing to watch. The more serious fights are pretty well choreographed and there's some great stunts through out the films. Etsuko Shihomi is quite the lady. She shows off some impressive skill and does a wonderful job of beating everything up. I certainly wouldn't have messed with here. The quality of the bluray is pretty decent and very consistent throughout. Being an exploitation film, it isn't exactly going to be top quality in terms of image and sound but it is good enough not to warrant any major complaints. The image is clear enough, it has lots of grain but doesn't look bad at any point. It looks like the average restoration of any old Japanese film that I've seen. I can only imagine what the previous dvd copies looked like, if there were any. The mono audio is a bit coarse but that's not unusual for films of this type. As someone who watches a lot of Asian cinema, I'm quite use to it by now but it might grate on others and it's perfectly understandable. I would put out a word of warning about these films in terms of gore and nudity. The trailer makes the films look considerably tamer than they are. But there is a lot of ladies with their bits out and about, lots of blood, dismemberment and cursing. It doesn't bother me personally but it might take some people by surprise and is always worth putting out a warning for those that appreciate such things. As a collection, I really enjoyed the Sister Street Fighter collection. It won't top any polls of greatest martial arts films but it doesn't stop them being highly energetic easy to watch movies, perfect for fans of such films.
