Ampeg Opto Comp Bass Compressor Pedal White, Opto-Comp

Why did you pick this product vs others?: I love Ampeg gear and this pedal did not disappoint! It really wakes up the tone on my PJ Bass with passive Geezer Butler EMG pickups. It’s the first pedal in my signal chain.

I wanted a simple easy to use compressor. Not a "flat top" limiter, but a dynamic compressor. This opto compressor uses a simple approach to compression that softly rides the gain, filling out the bass tonality. As an avid bass player and 50 year commercial audio professional, the simplicity of this compressor and the quality of the audio, sans artifacts, has made this my go to gig compressor.

Suttle compression. Lights let you know if you have a signal and how much you have. very smooth but the high end from the tone is slightly noisy, not a hum but a hiss. otherwise a good unit.

It is not an effects pedal. If it is doing it's job, you shouldn't hear it doing anything. That's exactly what I wanted and that's what I got. You can't tell it's on, but everything is now evened out very nicely. Not sure yet if I am getting any added sustain, but I need to work it it more to verify if so or if not. Even so, my sound is much more even now and that's what I really was looking for. Really easy to use compared to others I have had. About 10 seconds and it was good to go. Great job Ampeg! I also have their Classic preamp pedal which is awesome. Great together! EDIT: Having had this for sometime now I have changed from 5 stars to 3 at best. The problem is I have a jazz bass with passive pups and they are not hot enough to drive this pedal. The sensitivity is really weak. I put my Ampeg Classic Preamp before it which made it work fine, but the preamp had to have the volume up really high which made the noise floor unacceptable. The Ampeg Classic has great tone, but terrible noise if up very loud using a cabinet with a horn/tweeter. I may put this on my 6 sting electric and get something else for the bass. It would likely be fine with active or hotter pups.

For the money a great compression bass pedal. I would recommend this if more a budget rig.

I've been playing bass for nearly 40 years. I've tried other compressors (I own two other), and this is first one that works for me. For the price, you cannot beat it. Now I get it. Wasn't about to spend $300+ for something that might end up on the shelf with the others. I'm thinking optical is the way to go for bass. It's noticeable, adds a tad of mids. Super easy to use. Works with a 1-Spot AC adaptor.

If you are looking for a soft compresor, this pedal is a good option, tone doesn't change, noiseless and good gain adjustment

Ampeg is renown for their bass sound and I picked this pedal after lots of research. It was packaged well and shipped promptly. It made an immediate impact on my tone and was exactly what I needed.

Does what a compressor is supposed to do, even out the signal without introducing artifacts. Set and forget type, once I found the settings appropriate for my way of playing and my instrument, I just leave it, it's always on and it sound great.

… I already have good compressor sims on my Zoom pedals and it was a bit redundant. I didn’t even opened the box as it was really an impulse buy. However, I’m always on the fence of buying it again… until I realize I don’t need it!!
