Anyone that has an interest in Civil War tokens simply must read this book. Dave Bowers is, arguably, one of, if not the most important figures in numismatic literature today, and probably for as long as books about numismatics have been written. This isn't your simple, "Oh, this is a Civil War token and here are the varieties". That information is in this wonderful book, but more importantly, the why, how, where of their story. It is the history of a small piece of what happened during that time that many people don't know about or know very little. I've personally collected CWTs for years, thought I had a fairly good knowledge of them. This book showed me just how little I really knew.Simply put, not enough can be said about this book. It should be on every book shelf of anyone interested in collecting them, or just interested in aspects of the Civil War that are not well known.Is there any aspect of numismatics that Dave Bowers does not know in detail? I became interested in Civil War era tokens and store cards. This guide book gave me alot of info to make an informed decision. The book is FULL of illustrations and varities of both tokens and cards. I recommend this guide or any guide for the collector who is interested in buying or selling these items

This is a great backgrounder and guide to the various Civil War Tokens created during 1861 to 1865. I've always been interested in the Civil War, including battles and artifacts, and this book, by one of the greats, Q. David Bowers, is very informative as to how the economy suffered during the war. The pictures of the tokens are excellent, and it makes a great reference book. I highly recommend it for any Civil War buff, AND coin collector.

It was helpful to me in deciding among some tokens that I was considering purchasing for a small collection of Lincoln items.
