World War Z

I read this book years ago, and was one of many fans who was thrilled to hear a movie was being made. I watched and waited for it to come out...with some trepidation, as movies are often not as good as the books that inspired them. Fans of the book generally hated the movie. I resisted watching the movie until only recently, when it was on Netflix and I figured it been so long since I read the book, I could try it. Still not a fan of the movie....but it inspired me to order another copy of the book to re-read it. But this review is supposed to be about the book, right? Let me tell you more about the book.If you are a zombie fan, like me, surely you watched the Walking Dead. I had friends who didn't understand why I enjoyed the show, and I would explain to them that it wasn't really about the zombies per se, it was about how people responded to a crisis. For better, and usually, worse. Well, World War Z is like that. It is set several years AFTER a world-wide zombie crisis has occurred, and the world is in recovery. It is a series of interviews with all kinds of characters, who share their experiences, insight, and opinions-about why it happened, what was done right, wrong, etc. It tells a story of how different countries might have saved many people, or sacrificed them, based on their policies. How being rich, or poor, would affect your chances. How people would try to capitalize off the crisis, either legitimately, or in scams. It's just really well done. The movie is nothing like the book, except the title! Apparently Max Brooks was ok with the movie, but money talks, of course. I recently came across some rumors that they may make a sequel more in line with the book...we shall see.

I LOVE this book. I am buying this one to share with a friend who is a fan of Zombie stories. So much superior to the movie (which was heavily altered to be a vehicle for Brad Pitt) in the richness of the story and the characters. I insisted she read this as I feel it is a GREAT book. One that deserved MUCH better treatment by Hollywood. Mr. Brooks has "conjured" images with words that have stayed with me and some that still cause bad dreams to this day. His story telling is on par with that of Stephen King in my opinion. The movie "Contagion" is closer to how this zombie apocalypse plays out than the "WWZ" movie. The "narrator" is going around the world, now that the plague is under control and somewhat over, and interviewing people who were "there". Their stories, from the first incident of trouble, all the way to the aftermath, are "documented" in chilling and sometimes shocking detail. As I said, there are images that have stayed with me to this day. This would have made a fantastic limited mini-series with each episode a chapter/story or two of the survivors. Great book!! If you liked the movie, you should LOVE the book. As I said, MUCH richer in detail and scope.

Total anxiety soaked fear fest.

Great book, enjoyed the entire thing after reading I borrowed it out to a few friends and they have enjoyed it as well. As a Zombie fan and I came across this gem while deployed to Afghanistan so when I returned I had to get my own copy. I wished the movie followed the book.

This book is pretty dam great, I never read it before and I only watched the movie. I thought the movie was missing a bunch of information that I might be able to get from the book. But its on a whole other league to the movie, each short story was vivid and if you got a vivid mind you can picture anything they'll tell you. They even thought of everything, political problem, fixing the economy, even some guy making a fake drug that'll cure you. It was a riot but go and get a copy if you haven't read the book especially if you can imagine everything that happens in text.

My husband talked me in to reading this book. I've only seen the movie but I was pleasantly surprised! I will say that there were times I was bored but then other times I couldn't put it down. I love the interview dialect.

Great book on the Z topic. Well researched and thought out. Book is nothing like the Brad Pitt movie. Max Brooks other books are really good also.

Hats off to max brooks! This book is so descriptive, and imaginative, you get the sense you are part of it.

This book will really, really make you think. The author has a thought process that took me places I would have never thought of.

Bought for a Christmas present.
