Thought I'd just flip through the pix but found myself utterly drawn in to read almost all of it in one sitting. We're talking FASCINATING! First of all, the subject lived a crazy, unique life nobody else in the jewelry world comes close to. So the story is compelling. The author does a fine job managing the material and presenting it in a way that's devoid of art criticism bull, pedantic scholarly rants, museum-quality snooty boring monologues. Instead, she pulls you in to the world of Paul Flato and you can't get enough. A very skillful writer, and of my 100+ jewelry tomes, an instant fave.If you collect jewelry books, as I do, you must have this one. If you like Hollywood insider stuff, ditto. Crime and punishment, too. A don't miss. Kudos E.I. Bray!

Hollywood bling
The book is awesome. In the plus side, not only is so well written and photographed, FINALLY somebody illustrated the marks and signatures you should expect to see in a piece of jewelry (so many books in modern jewelry forget this little but so important detail). The downside: you want to see more of the small charms he was so famous for, the book concentrate in the large bling and illustrate the small items in sketches. Still a must for a collector.

Finally some answers!
While serving as a librarian at the Gemological Institute of America back in the early 1990's, I used to check in all the magazines and auction catalogs. Looking through all the auction catalogs was a perk of the job and my eye was drawn to Flato pieces again and again. There was not a lot written about him at that time and the little I gleaned from the short auction catalog bio only made me want to learn more about this mysterious jeweler. This book is informative of his history as well as being a beautiful photographic record of his work. I very rarely run into his pieces as an independent jewelry appraiser but when I do they are instantly recognizable and a pleasure to inspect. The workmanship of the jewelry is invariably precise and the combinations of gemstones and metals is whimsical and fresh. So I'm very glad to be able to add this informative and beautiful book to my working library.

Great book on little-known jewelry designer to the stars
This is a beautiful book. I loved seeing sketches of the jewelry next to photos of the movie stars wearing the pieces. The story is fascinating. A man at the top of his game who then goes on to bankruptcy and prison after a few unfortunate events. Hopefully, more people will rediscover this jeweler.

wonderful book
I knew Mr. Flato so I really enjoyed this book. He made me a ring in 1974 and there is actually a similar one in the book from his Mexico period. He was a fascinating man.

Coffee table book without adequate documentation.
A classic coffee table book regarding the stars and the jewelry that Flato designed for them. But not really academic-where did his ideas come from and how did he decide what to decide for which celebrity.

A Must Have Coffee Table Book
Elegant and stylish, this book about one of America's best jewelers, reveals an era where the jewels were almost as big as the stars who wore them.
