Young Sheldon: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray]

This is a charming, laugh-aloud comedy series with an autistic-savant at its core. Like all multi-season series about charismatic children, it ages with them, and should cease when the star grows old enough to be no longer charming.

Young Sheldon serves as an origin story for the character of Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory. It is set in Texas in 1989 when Sheldon (played by Iain Armitage) and his twin sister Missy (played by Raegan Revord) are both 9 years old. Sheldon is starting ninth grade (in the same class with his older brother Georgie (played by Montana Jordan)), which neither of them likes very well. The cast is rounded out by Zoe Perry, who plays the younger version of Sheldon's mother Mary (and who also happens to be the real-life daughter of Laurie Metcalf who plays Sheldon's mother on BBT), Lance Barber who plays Sheldon's father George, a football coach at the high school, Annie Potts as Connie/Meemaw, Sheldon's grandmother.The show, while being a half-hour sitcom is very different from BBT, which works very well for the show. Firstly, and most notably, it is not filmed in front of an audience and has no laugh track. So, it has much more of a Wonder Years like feel to it, with Jim Parsons acting as the narrator. Secondly, it does not try to be a carbon copy of BBT, especially where the character of Sheldon is concerned. It is not like watching grown-up Sheldon in a nine-year old's body. The producers and writers went out of their way to make the younger version of Sheldon different than his older self, with glimpses of whom he would grow into. For example, he dressed and acted like an adult at 9, and when he is in his 30s he dresses and acts more like a kid. He is also not as cynical as he is as an adult, but you can see how he was starting to become cynical at that age. The show definitely would not work as well if the showrunners had not taken that approach. That said, there are plenty of references to things we eventually see in BBT, so the two shows are tied together well.For those who get the blu-ray set, it is a pretty standard MOD set. There are captions, and a couple of behind-the-scenes extras included on the second disc. But, you do not get an extensive amount of extras. The A/V quality is good but is not super important given that there are not a ton of special effects (other than de-aging Bob Newhart who appears as Professor Proton).Overall, the show is well written and very well acted. While it is definitely a sitcom, with a story-of-the week flavor, it can also be considered a dramedy, because there are very warm and heartfelt moments in it. Raegan Revord and Annie Potts pretty much steal every scene they are in. Revord really nails the character of Missy and makes you wish the character would have been around more in the parent series. Montana Jordan is also great as George Jr. and looks enough like Jerry O'Connell that you can buy that is whom he will become. The show has pretty good continuity with BBT, other than the casting of Barber who played a different role on BBT, but given that it was a small, one-off, role it is not really a big deal. If you are a fan of BBT, and especially if you are a fan of the character of Sheldon, this is definitely a must-watch.

You meet the Coopers. Normal Texas family football coach dad, religious mom, slacker teen son, twin 9 year old brother sister, crazy grandma. Twin 9 year old son is a super genus in every way. Germopobic. Nice but drives everyone insane. This season he is going to same high school as older brother. That school has no idea what it's in for or how to handle him. He has to deal with bullies, making a friend, fear of dogs, NASA, all sorts of crazy stuff. VERY FUNNY and as season and seasons go on just gets funnier.

GREAT SHOW

I have to say this is one of the best new family shows out there. It’s quickly become a household favorite to my family... its very much enjoyed by my 6 year old to my grandmother. Dare I say its kinda replacing The Big Bang Theory as my favorite series on Thursday nights. I loved the DVD extras and getting to know the wonderful cast. I definitely recommend this DVD to anyone who is a fan of The Big Bang Theory, but you don’t need to be a fan of Big Bang to fall in love with this spin-off series.

It is a cute show that has a few ackward bits in some episodes, especially relating to scenes involving sex. The old professor is believable as Sheldon's friend, not so much as the grandmothers lovers. I wonder how they will deal with Sheldon's age if the series lasts a few years. A 30 year old actor can look the same for 10 years, but a 10 year old ?

Young Sheldon is fantastic. It’s more than just a Big Bang Theory spin-off. It’s in a league of its off. The casting was really well done. The cast has a great chemistry with one another. The acting is very natural. The show is filled with humour, heartbreak, heartwarming moments and more. All things that happen with families in real life. All the characters are very special, unique and amazing in their own ways!The season 1 DVD came in great condition with some great special features. I preordered it and it shipped in great time. Wir haben uns schon oft am erwachsenen Sheldon in "The Big Bang Theory" erfreut und waren gespannt, wie dieser besondere Charakter als Kind dargestellt wird. Auch der junge Sheldon und seine Familie machen uns viel Vergnügen. Dabei lebt der Spaß nicht nur vom titelgebenden Sheldon, sondern auch von seiner ganz normalen Zwillingsschwester Missy, deren Alltagsschläue Sheldon immer wieder verblüfft, von dem größeren Bruder Georgy, vom Football-Coach-Vater Georg, von der umsorgenden Mutter, deren religiöser Eifer bei Sheldon so gar keinen Widerhall findet, und nicht zuletzt von der Oma Conny, die es immer wieder "krachen" lässt.
