littleBits Base Inventor Kit

I bought this because I was attracted by the free design and create approach once some basic projects have been completed. I confess that I have only seen the box! What follows id what my 8 year old grandson says about it. He is very pleased with it. He has made several Level 1 projects and has begun working on level 2. His current project is "the grabber". He plans to make some more projects at that level and then try some that integrate LEGO. (He is a keen LEGO user)

Brilliant piece of kit for my niece's 9th birthday. It's like a toolbox of sorts with circuits, paper templates, and a cool app with easy to follow instructions that allow for loads of different builds. Her mum loves that after all the set models are complete it encourages and allows free building and rebuilding and design creativity too. A really amazing toy with hours of building and playing. She and her sister designed this cheeky "cavity fairy" to gobble up some leftover birthday sweets.

These kits are great if not overpriced. Be warned that the components are delicate and no one in the UK sells spares. This means that you will have to pay import taxes on overpriced components. If you are a school, this can work out very expensive.

Target group: elementary K-5 public school with a STEAM innovative program designation. Our 5th graded gifted/high achiever class assisted with this review, along with other reviews for littleBits invention kits that we purchased.Pros:-Students were very engaged after opening and organizing parts and materials.-Allowed students to tinker with individual components to see how they worked without initial instruction (Makerspace mentality).-Encourages collaboration as a small group activity.-App interface was easy to access, use, and follow. Videos were detailed for builds, and completion unlocked the next video/build.-From the viewpoint of a teacher, various builds can lead to connections to science standards (series circuits, forms of energy, forces & motion, the scientific process, etc). The base inventor kit had a lot of interesting builds, and my students were proud of their completed door alarm and look forward to the next invention.-Will be a great addition to our future Makerspace room!Cons:-Build instructions should also be available online (web-based). Not all schools readily have access to smart devices like phones or tablets. My students had to use their own personal devices (elementary students don't all have smart phones).-Cardboard components may not last if the kits are disassembled and passed on in a school setting. I would consider plastic molds/parts.

Our son got this as an early Christmas gift and loved it. His brothers got the other Little Bits kits and all were thrilled. Half the fun of these toys is putting them together. The directions must be easy to follow because all of our kids were able to do them pretty easily (7 year old needed adult help but it wasn't a headache!). IThe directions for the kids to follow are on the app, which I normally wouldn't like, but it's just a simple instructional video that they loved. The toy does not require the app to then play with. It becomes a lot of different inventions that can be disassembled and re-assembled. I definitely recommend this as a Christmas gift for 9-12 year olds - they will love them! And if you like it you should check out the other little bits. We will be getting these for some of our god children this season!!

Good fun toy to keep the kids busy. Instructional and informative, a lot of fun to break it down and build different things. Two concerns: 1) Servo Motor did not last long, it died within the first few builds. But support provided some troubleshooting tips and then a replacement. 2) the shapes are made using paper/cardboard which is very flimsy and does not last long after a few builds.

I bought this gift for my nephew’s 10th birthday. He’s always been a creative kid who is interested in how things work. He was able to get his first invention (the stuff protector) up and running in no time and was fending off intruders to his bedroom. The other inventions are both fun and thoughtful - my nephew especially loves the gripper, a hand extension operated by sound. There is a nice variety of activities in this kit, and since the Bits are able to be interchanged, there are countless applications outside of the projects outlined in the app. This kit has endless hours of play and a great message about inventing to make positive change.
