An outstanding introductory summary of Hannibal's life
This little book is written quite clearly and comprehensively.Although targeted for younger readers, it can serve as an excellent introduction to the life of Hannibal and the course of The Punic Wars for university students as well. The narrative provides adequate background information to indicate why Hannibal made his epic march up through Spain, over the Alps, and down into Italy to confront the armies of Rome in some of the greatest battles of antiquity. After completing this book, a student will have an informed appreciation of Hannibal's military genius, and The Roman Republic's heroic resolution in the face of what may well have been its greatest challenge.Recommended without reservation.

A good summary of Hannibal's life for children
The book provides a good overview of the life of Hannibal for kids. I read this book with my nine year son and he quite enjoyed it. The style is quite accesible to young readers. While the book had some minor errors and left out of some good Hannibal anecdotes (for example, the second time that Hannibal met Scipio), it is well worth it for children interested in ancient history.

not too terrifying
This is a good introduction to one of the world's greatest military minds. Older children and teens can learn about Hannibal's campaigns and the Punic Wars in a way that is interesting and entertaining. That's not to say that the book is jovial or trivial; it is not. But it is very readable, and where boys are concerned, being readable is important. It is illustrated with classical art depicting Hannibal... this is where I think some interesting illustrations may have been better for the book. But the classical approach does set this book apart as a work of history and not just another book.Good size for a book. Quality construction. Wonderful glossary - two whole pages! Good index.
