Q: What is the difference between the different models? Is height the same for all of them?

SMS-20 has steel & plastic components with a max height of 47". The SMS-30 goes to 59". The SMS-40 & -50 use aluminum & plastic and go to 47" and 59" respectively.

The lip is about 2" - plenty big for most any music book. And the stand is pretty heavy, definitely heavy enough to be stable.
