You'll have to buy more then you need, but still worth it.
The media could not be loaded. I like the look of them. They are pretty thin and ABSOLUTELY need some form of adhesive to hold them in place(see my crappy video). Either staples or small nails or double sided tape. A few of them in the box are also cut crookedly, as you can see in my photo, so you'll need to discard those. So buy enough to account for around 15-20% (in my case). My video shows how easily they slide on the stair. I do however like the length of them, it covers a lot of the stair.UPDATE 3 years later. So in my case they seem to last about 3 years before needing replacement, but our children are grown and moved away, so just two of us and two large dogs. Yours may need to be replaced sooner. I am buying these again and have upgraded my review by a star.

Not as durable as you would hope.
Installed these treads over a year ago because of the reviews. They are easy to install with the recommended tape and they looked nice. However, after six months' use, I regretted buying them. Most of these reviews were probably written soon after installation. If you have high traffic stairs or dogs, pay attention to how you tape them down. They quickly start wearing at the edges and eventually curl up. Dogs tend to drag their feet over the edges of the stairs, and they do it the exact same way every time they go up. These treads cannot handle traffic very well. For the price you pay, they should be more durable. Also, even with tape, after awhile the treads will start pulling away from the tape. The back is covered with a rubbery material that crumbles away. If you do buy them, install the tape along the entire width at the very outside edges of the treads, both horizontal and vertical, and some in the middle too. See photo for what happened after six months' use. **Update: I went ahead and bought another set after a year and replaced almost all of the treads I had down. I bought them again since my wife and I couldn't agree on another product. If you tape them down very well, paying attention to the edges, they should be able to last a while. I have upgraded my review from 1 to 3 stars. I still feel they are on the expensive side for what you get.

Lifesaver for wood stairs!
We have a 90lb golden retriever that was TERRIFIED of the wood steps we added in our basement renovation. We were so scared she would slip or try skipping steps and hurt herself. Pros: The grey color is exactly as the images show. The pile is short and easy to vacuum. I haven’t had to deal with any stains so far, but I doubt we’d have an issue. Cons: we have chosen not to use any tape/adhesive for the sake of saving our steps. With the decision, I do find myself having to straighten the threads every few days or so. They do not move when anyone is walking on them, it’s more when my toddler comes down the stairs sliding on his rear. TIP: these did come with a bump where they folded during shipping. We used water bottles for a couple of days to have them level out. Looked a little funny, but did the trick!

Saved our dog's life
We were hesitant to purchase these after some of the other reviews. We have 3 dogs, one elderly who was slipping going up on the hardwood stairs and fell down a number of times going down. We bought the carpet tape to tape them down since it said it would not damage the hard wood floors. We have not used the tape yet. Our dogs are bounding up the stairs and the treads are not moving. We placed them against the back of the stair and no movement. I have taken each one off to dust the stairs and still, not moving. My son with work boots....he move them slightly but did not affect our dog's ability to navigate the stairs. Thank you! We could not be more pleased. And, if after washing, we need to use the tape we bought, so be it.

These make it possible for him to go up and down easily and with no slipping
***2 year update ***These continue to work but after two years the grip on the bottom doesn't really hold. It's not like you are going to slip or fall but our daily routine now includes putting them back on the steps. These are exactly what we needed. Our aging dog struggles on the wood steps. These make it possible for him to go up and down easily and with no slipping.Do these stay in place? Yes and no. Over the course of a day the tend to drift on the step. However, they are not loose in the sense that they will come out from under you as you are walking. To make them truly secure would involve carpet tape and we are not going to go to that extreme. The way they are now is fine. These treads are not terribly thick but they are thick enough. Any thicker and they would likely be a tripping hazard. The secondary benefit is that it is now much quieter when anyone walks on the stairs. Not a goal but nice given our 5 year old walks as if he weighs 10,000 pounds. So if you need something to help on stairs these are great.

grippy and pretty
Our Chorkie dog is as tall as a step, and the slippery stairs scared him. For 2 months he never climbed up or down, he made us valet him up & downstairs. We got these delivered Tuesday, by Wednesday night he went downstairs from the start all by himself! It really helps, even I am not grabbing on the railing to descend anymore. We just lay the carpets down, no tape or anything. The marine backing is very grippy. The cats like to bundle up the top step tread though, but they will get bored with that game, I hope

Worked as intended
I had to trim a bit off each tread as my stairs have nosing moulding on them and the treads would not fit otherwise. They don't move if there is pressure on them (stepping on them) and seem to stay in place. I did not check the durability rating as I have only had them in place for a few weeks. One point to note, the pattern is slightly crooked in relation to the actual stair tread cut. It makes trimming using the pattern/weave a bit difficult but certainly not a deal breaker. I would order these again.
