How many real channels does this unit have?

I assume by real you mean XLR inputs. It has 16 XLR channels and 17-24 are 1/4 inch stereo paired inputs. I use it as a mixer for my bands in-ear mixes. It has two 32 bit effects that sound pretty good. All 16 XLR channels have phantom power. In addition to the typical 4 Sub mixes it has a mono out with a sub setting to roll off highs.

Would this board be good for recording rap music

Absolutely - It is a great PA System as wel as a great Live Audio Source when we jam and record live. I utilizes inputs from 1/4 inch Plugs, both Stereo and Mono (Balanced and Unbalanced), as well as XLR and has at least one MIDI Input (I haven't look at the back lately, there may be two and a Loop/Effects Input) It also has a great feature I use all the time, I play drums and I love to play LOUD - I have my CD/DVD Player hooked into the Accessories Input via RCA Input and it rocks far louder than I would ever need - Did I say I play LOUD, Like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath Loud. Ours is running a Pair of very huge Peavey 215's (Don't let the name fool you - I was skeptical when I bought them - They Rock Hard) If you are thinking of a extremely versatile PA System at a Recording Studio level of quality at the same time not breaking the Bank - This is your new toy. Can you record on garageband with this board? If so how?

It depends on how many 1/8" jacks you have available on your PC, processor, operating system, and what drivers you are running. I am running a $46 AMD chip with all the associated drivers and 5 1/8" line level i/o. Windows 8 runs the AMD Realtek HD Audio manager on my system(I built my PC), it came factory I believe with the Mobo, its what I run. Intel uses sumething else I am sure because I searched for it in the program files and it appears to be an AMD release. Either way, it provides me the ability to route all factory 1/8" jacks however I want. I can pull in 5 stereo channels directly to Fruity Loops 12, or run 7.1 surround sound out. Any DAW you run(Digital Audio Workstation, I.E. Garage Band) will be able to pick up and record line level signal this mixing board can produce. You can accomplish this by running any combination of sub-mixes in any combination combined out the auxiliary send, fx send, sub-group and main mix channel to create either 8 sub-mixes and one main-mix, or 10 sub-mixes(to record 10 channel strips independently or do whatever you please). You will need 5 dual 1/4" TS to 1/8" TRS cables to record in this fashion.
