This is an amazing book. I love it. I feel like I have already reviewed it but I must have talked about it online somewhere. After the first two chapters I am totally there. It makes me wish I was Japanese. Then I would have grown up there and might have been lucky enough to live in the world described by Naomi. A theme throughout the book is her mothers Tokyo kitchen. It's amazing. I haven't even got to the end yet but I'm excited about it. This is not a diet book. It is a book about Japanese lifestyle. They are amazingly healthy and well fed. They have portion control down. It's eye opening and surprisingly (to anyone like me who knows little about Japanese food) they are not all about sushi. There are recipes dotted throughout the book. I haven't tried any yet but the ones I've read so far sound great. I would give this more than five stars if I could, it's that good. I thank the stars the Naomi's life has turned out the way it has because it means she wrote this book (in English) and we get to benefit.

Good book
Haven't finished it yet but it's so far pretty good. I like that she includes recipes and lifestyle differences. I'm currently a poor student but when I'm a little more wealthy I'd love to invest in some of her ideas.

Great book - even WITH kids
We have recently acquired this book and having made almost all the recipes, I love it! The author does a superb job describing the home life/food life of Japanese cooking rather than the American stylized version or the sushi bar. I have had a very easy time making all the recipes and I am a complete convert to the Japanese Country Breakfast. My 5 year old and my 1 year old eat the breakfast of egg, rice, broth and veggies. I think it depends on what they ate prior to trying these dishes. Certainly a child who has been used to more "typical" American breakfast of cold cereal and the like will find this vastly different. However, we have always controlled processed sugar intake and not infrequently had veggies for breakfast so this was not that much of a stretch. I definitely find with incorporating the recipes and principles into our diet that I am more satisfied with each meal and find myself searching for "something sweet" or "feeling munchy" less often. We live in Michigan so not ethnic center that New York is and I am still able to find an Asian grocery with most or all of the ingredients I am looking for. Do yourself a favor - get an asian rice cooker. It makes all the difference! I am off to find more Japanese home recipes!
