As good as the expensive grit.
It works as well as the more expensive brand that I usually use. I don't see the harm in using a cheaper stage 1 grit.

Step 1 is the step I worry about the least as far as grit quality; having said that, I still keep going back to this brand. It's an excellent value, plus the canister it comes in is easy to grip and has a nice wide mouth. Also canister is large enough to reuse for something else when empty. Will keep repurchasing.
