As long as your steel is clean this will do wonders for your surface finish!

Works really fast when fresh - 30seconds. It's a 1:9 mix. One part blackening, 9 parts distilled water. As "stuff/contaminants" drop out of solution it may take 3 or 4 minutes. Filtering helps (400 sieve). A "splash" of blackening helps, but the solution is getting old.
