Hi Bailey - no, this does not require batteries.

Q: Are they little marbles or big

The marbles are about the size of a regular marble. Not big.

Q: I wonder how high can a marble go, say on a 45 degree slope?

45 degree slope seems steep to expect any upward movement. I would say not high at all.

Q: Is this for the tip tube or volcano? The picture is tip tube but the description is the volcano.

The manufacturer's answer is incorrect. Our order just arrived and it was the tip tube.
