Newbie here... i have 8 100w panels, a solarepic 4210a, and 4 100 ah gel cell batteries. prefer 12v battery bank to match 12vdc loads. thoughts?

Typical 100w 12 volt panels will have a max current rating of around 6 amps. You cannot put them all in parallel as the max current would be 48 amps which is greater than 40 amps the controller supports. Wire up two panels in series. Do this 4 times. Then wire the 4 pairs in parallel. This will be running at 48/2 = 24 amps and at a nominal voltage of 24 volts. Wire this to the controller PV input. Wire all 4 batteries in parallel so nominal battery voltage is 12 volts. Hook the 12 volt battery bank to the controller. It is fine that the PVs are at nominal 24V but battery bank at nominal 12V. They don’t need to be the same. You could even do 48V nominal PVs into the controller which would be running at max amps of 12 amps. However 24V nominal PVs will be more efficient per the controllers instruction booklet. Note that nominal PV voltage is not actual PV voltage. 24V nominal PVs will run between 24 and 40 volts or so depending on sunlight. But max amps will always be below the short circuit amps shown on the back of the PV. Hope this helps.

Does this unit have a 4 stage charger (bulk, acceptance, maintenance and equilization?

Yes. If the battery voltage is below the set point, it will charge in MPPT mode at the maximum current it can supply. It does do periodic maintenance and equalization. When not doing any of these things, it will float charge the battery. It will always kick into MPPT mode where needed to supply power to a load.

Can you use more than one of these in parallel?

I honestly don't know the answer to that as I've only used one at a time fed from two solar panels in parallel. That's (1) MPPT fed by (2) 250 WATT solar panels. I will tell you that I had one of these go bad on me while camping in my RV. It developed an internal short while charging (2) 6 volt batteries connected in series. Now the batteries were discharged pretty low after a previous day of rain followed by night. The next day was very sunny and this probably created quite a load on the MPPT. I replaced the fuses in it (both 40 Amp) and as soon as I connected the battery back up it blew both fuses again. So this tells me that this thing should be fused for something less than 40 Amps (in my humble opinion). If I was going to try what you are suggesting, I would make sure to fuse the BATT and LOAD sides for no more than 30 Amps each (but no more than 40 Amps total). And I would also ensure to use all of the same type solar panels. And all panels should have the same sun exposure. Otherwise I think you are setting yourself up for a cascading failure effect!
