Greatest Hits Re-recorded Volume One

If you don't know Larry Carlton's work, this is one collection you can acquire to become a fan. There are other hit collections and individual albums that may be as good or better. However, as a longtime Larry fan, I can safely say that if you're inclined to like Larry, this collection will hook you. Then you can discover the rest.You newcomers to Carlton will hear his wonderful composing chops on full display, with the possibly exceptions of RCM and Red Hook Poker. Carlton's best tunes will remind you of songs on Steely Dan's Royal Scam and Aja. Ditto Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark. There's a good reason for this: Larry was right in the arranging mix with Becker, Fagen and Mitchell. His amazing harmonic touch is all over the tunes on these disks.You will also hear some great guitar soloing on these tunes. These solos will blow the doors off of what most smooth jazz guitar players lay down. More than that, I would say that Larry is one of the most harmonically lyrical soloist you will ever hear. He is such a master of music theory that he can go places with his note choice that are completely unexpected and innovative, but are completely inside the harmony. In jazz terms, he's the best at outside insideness.If you want to hear all of these in full on one track, I would recommend either "Smiles and Smiles" or "Room 335." The first is vintage acoustic Larry. The second is electric Larry on a the Gibson ES 335.One more point for longtime Carlton fans: you probably already know that Larry's soloing career is like a fire on a winter's night. At the beginning he was throwing flames well past the flu. With the passage of time, the fire has subsided substantially. The smaller flames are mixed with wonderful red, glowing logs on a long slow burn.The good news of this collection is that Larry's soloing mojo is stoked by the great chord progressions in his tunes. So, while these aren't his best solos, they will not disappoint. One exception for me is "Smiles and Smiles" to go. I think he outdid the original on that one, which is no mean feat.I give the collection 4 stars out of respect for other Larry disks that are better. That said, this is a fine place for newbies to start with and a great gift to longtime fans.In that spirit, let me say, "thanks very much, Larry. You're the greatest!"

Having been a Larry Carlton fan listening to some of his early music and works with Fourplay I decided to purchase this CD. It is very enjoyable and relaxing. Good music for the car. mark

Larry Carlton is a favorite. I can't think of anything he has ever recorded that has not been great.

VRY GOOD

I was hoping for an up to date version of Room 335 and other great songs but they've been reduced to gentle, easy-listening shadows of what they once were.

THIS CD WAS THE GREATEST RIP-OFF I EVER PAID FOR. BECAUSE YOUR WEB SITE DID NOT ALLOW ME TO SEE HOW MANY SONGS WERE ON THE CD, I ASSUMED THAT FOR $26 IT WAS A 2 CD SET. MUCH TO MY CHAGRIN, WHEN I GOT THE CD, IT HAD ONLY 9 SONGS. I FIRED OFF A PREVIOUS ANGRY EMAIL AND WAS TOLD I COULD SEND IT BACK IF I DIDN'T WANT IT. UNFORTUNATELY, I HAD ALREADY OPENED IT.ACCORDINGLY, I HAVE CANCELLED MY AMAZON CREDIT CARD AND WILL MAKE FURTHER ON-LINE PURCHASES FROM OTHER COMPANIES.

This album has not left the deck since it arrived a couple of weeks ago. Smooth, effortless guitar-playing by a master of the instrument. Larry’s pedigree as a session ace, elite sideman and fearless solo artist guarantees that if you like any other jazz, soft-rock or funk player you’re going to love this as much as I do. Highly recommended.

Jazz-rock guitar which is easy on the ear but never bland. Larry Carlton is a master. Why not five stars? I think the band could have been more adventurous. But the quality of Larry's playing comes through brilliantly, and the tunes are appealing and memorable.
