Q: is there any padding / protection for the crown / top of the head. ie is it suitable for weapons sparring?

There is. It offers good all round protection of the head. I use it for soft kit HMB practice which is full contact sword and shield and longsword fighting and I have no complaints. The only thing you want to be aware of is that there is no protection for the neck as it follows the jawline basically.

I use it for full contact sword fighting (soft weapons - 750g) and have no complaints. The plastic guard is quite sturdy and the helmet does not move around a lot on my head while still offering full protection. That being said, I cannot vouch for it in a boxing match, but it would assume it will protect you. I would not use it without the plastic guard if you are looking to protect your nose seeing as it would be too open then.
